woodburner chimney advise

Hello
I need some help on where to put my chimney. I have a 24x24 shop and was thinking of puting the burner in the front corner up by the doors.Should I go up thru the roof with one of those chimney kits or out the side wall and up. It's a small boxwood type stove.My friend says I'll be okay out the side and up but I'm new to wood heat and would like to know what you are all doing.

With a wood burner, it is always a good idea to keep cleaning the chimney in mind. And turn or bend in the chimney will make cleaning the chimney (sweeping) a PAIN.

As much as I hate going thru the roof with anything, chimneys fall into the safe category as plumbing vents.... it just makes more sense to do it.

Well, physics would suggest that a warm chimney is a better bet so keeping it inside and putting it through the roof is the best option as far as venting and draft direction is concerned.

Go straight up if it is possible. Offsets are a pain to clean and affect the draft.

it's also a hell of alot cheaper to go up through the roof. Ask me how i know (i sell wood stoves and chimneys for a living). Going up through the roof the stove will work alot nicer, easier to start when cold, better draft, and easier to clean. As a minimum i would put at least 8 feet of chimney in from the ceiling up, even if you can get away with less. The reason being is that most cheap box stove require more draft than higher effeicant stoves like those made by pacific energy or enviro.

When you exit the roof, most codes require at least 3 feet higher than anything within a 10 foot horizontal distance.

I would definatly keep the flu pipe inside the shop for a couple reasons. One is its cheaper. Two is that you can keep more heat inside the shop, since the flu pipe inside the shop does not need to be insulated it will give off a good amount of heat. We heat our 28x40 shop with a small stove and even when its zero outside it will be a consistant 70-75 degrees inside (mind you we only have 2 inches of foam insulation in the ceiling and half a dozen 3x4 windows and the shop is heated on a strict diet of pine).

I would definatly go with a triple wall pipe like the Simpson Duraplus. Triple wall heats up faster which reduces creosote build up. Another thing is don't be afraid to run the stove nice and hot. Nothing is less productive then a smokey cold fire. We burn alot of wood that most people won't even put in a bon fire (pine, box elder, poplar, pretty much any wood that we get). I have cleaned both the shop (15 ft run) and the house (30ft run) for the past 12 years and the most creosote i have pulled from the house was less then an inch in the bottom of a regular sized paper grocers bag for a full seasons (sept.-april) use. I credit this to a nice hot fire and the Duraplus pipe.

Another thing you might consider is a ceiling fan, they make a world of difference in moving the air around and keeping the whole shop a little warmer.

I have decided to go up but havent nailed down where exactly to locate it. My 24x24 is set up as one bay is a vehicle bay and the other is a workshop. I have a bench running down the one side [16ft] so I either have to put it in the front corner by the doors or put it in the middle of the workshop bay and then just move it out of the way in the summer. What would you guys do?? My wall space is really critical.

If you put it in the corner you are going to have quite a bit of chimmney protruding above the roof to get the required clearance. I would put it near the center of the shop if possible. If you have a metal roof it is also much easier to flash the chimmney if you poke through the roof near the ridge as you can just stuff the flashing up under the cap.

Thanks for all the helpful advise. I didn't think about the chimney height if it was in the corner. I'll probably locate it in the middle of the workshop side bay and go up.This should help me in the summer to clean it out since I will be tired of walking around it by then and move it out of the way.

Anyone know how long it will take to warm up a 24x24 mildly insulated in the walls and no ceiling? Say 40* to 60*?
I do have a box fan on it's side blowing down air on low.[hey it works]

More insulation and some sort of ceiling is in the future plans but for now it's just gonna be the stove since it kinda fell in my lap for free.
