Wooden Gutter leaking

I have a wooden gutter that is leaking at a joint. The wood appears to be in ok condition. Silicon sealer was used about 2 years ago on it and it did not last. I am not sure of the conditions in which it was applied etc......

Is there something better for this application that will potentially last longer than 2 years and hopefully much longer.

Thanks.

Gorilla Glue
*100% Waterproof: Doesn't break down when exposed to outdoor elements
*Versatile: Easily bonds wood, stone, metal, ceramic, foam, glass, concrete and much more!
*Incredibly Strong: Expands 3 times into the materials to form an incredibly strong bond
*Temperature Resistant: Bond holds through hot and cold temperatures

Anything you do would just be a temp fix. Wood gutters were commonly used years ago and they rot with age, typically at the joints and downspout connections first, then the gutter itself where they are attached to the house. I'm surprised some are still in service. Yours will likely need full replacement in the not too distant future.

Are your gutters inset in the roof? Lots of those on old houses but always roofed over as they always leak eventually. I love the architecture of them but just bad in practice

Typically sealed with pitch and covered with copper tab -- pitch is sap. Take a picture.

My place in philadelphia has wood gutters predating the last century ... as long as they drain and dry the old wood will last for a long time. No glues or silicone. Mine are filled with BLO and lime.

I was thinking of the stuff that they used to advertise that sealed gutters and screen doors water proof.

That stuff does work, not sure how long it will last? but I did buy a spray can of it and used it on various items.

Flex Seal is what I used.

The "gutter seal" sold by Allied Bldg products was what I used on my aluminum gutters. Silvery grey color. However its the stickiest stuff I can ever remember getting on my hands. I would try to cut, sand or file back to dry clean wood and try some of that.

I can't say in have ever heard of wooden gutters.

They're not all that uncommon in Massachusetts.

Typically sealed with pitch and covered with copper tab -- pitch is sap. Take a picture.

YOU understand.

Long Beach CA, the sewer by the sea.
Silicone caulk was a poor choice to begin with. In fact, silicone is a dated product with so many types of specific caulking and sealants available nowadays. Other than that, I have no suggestion.

Lots of replies....thanks.....BTW it is not my house and in the Northeast there are lots of old homes with wooden gutters although many have been replaced.

The homeowner lives in a 150 year old plus home and feels it adds value to keep the wood gutters. IDK but some real estate person could confirm this.

I know silicon is a bad choice. I have seen it fail on aluminum gutters. The Gutter seal is good on Aluminum but I have never seen it used or talk about on wood gutters.

I went with a roofing sealer in a calk style tube.....A general contractor told me it was a good choice......it is black and tar like and not expensive. It seals and will cures under water. So I am not concerned with rain for the near future.

We will see how it goes. Thanks.

PS. never knew about BLO.....at least in this context.

Try a marine supply house. They have tons of options for fillers and sealers meant to be exposed to water

never heard of wooden gutters either and I live in an area with a lot of old houses...learn something new every day.

If you use gorilla glue, be careful about squeeze out. it expands and is pretty ugly.

I would think an oil would be best. Either straight BLO as mentioned or Danish oil. Danish oil would at least provide some film protection as it contains polyurethane.

Either way, make sure they are dry before applying.
