Woods Electrical Tools at Lowes

A while back someone here speculated that Lowes might already be getting rid of Southwire (SW), due to the various SW tools that were on clearance. Today I noticed a new brand on the hangars in the electrical tool section. They are packaged as Woods and appear fairly simple in appearance and packaging. I didn't pay much attention to the price, but their 9" side cutters are a third the cost of Southwire's version. For a comparison, search for item numbers 637714 (Woods) and 637705 (SW). COO is the same as SW and Kobalt pliers.

Anyway, I wonder if this is Lowes' answer to poor sales in that department. Some pros or DIY'ers may grab SW in a pinch, but the prices are ridiculous and most tool-saavy people are probably wary of an untested brand. Home Depot still sells Klein, which cost a fair amount, but Joe Homeowner has other choices at that store if he doesn't want to spend 3 hours salary on some pliers he'll use once. The SW stuff shows no sign of going anywhere, so is it safe to assume that Woods is just a way to offer a cheap alternative in the electrical section? Why not just stick with Kobalt, Task Force or Blue Hawk?

I've noticed how redundant some of Lowe's tool inventory is. Now they have another brand that (so far) only offers a handful of basic pliers and cutters. Besides Channellock, all are Chinese made, and there is little price difference with existing non-SW brands.

I walked out of the store empty-handed, having not found any quality crimpers from a brand I can trust. It's funny, though, I counted at least fifteen different brands and styles of razor knives a few weeks ago. If you want to skyjack a plane or simply slice some cardboard, Lowes is THE place to go. If you want some quality electrical tools, head to Home Depot.

I'm still chapped that they dropped Knipex....

Definitely, I just wish I had been around to enjoy the clearance savings. Lowes has dropped a number of well-known and trusted tool brands in favor of imported Stanley/Fatmax/Bostitch or up-and-(maybe)coming brands like Southwire. While I've been a Lowes loyalist for a few years, Home Depot is becoming a common destination due to their carrying more brands. I can go to Lowes and get Kobalt, 6 choices of Channellock, one of the countless Stanley brands, or some brands I've never heard of outside of the blue store. I can go to HD and get many more Channellock options, Milwaukee, Wiss, Klein, Husky, and more.

Shame lowes used to be the place to go and now through cost cutting it looks like HD is now the place to shop. Funny thing when they had their knipex clearout men came out of the woodwork myself included and we bought everything in sight nothing was left.

I never see anyone looking at the southwire products when I go into the lowes in my area.

+1000000000 on that. I use them everyday and Knipex is the best. It is smoothe and easy on tired old arthritic hands. I am fixing to be 67 and usually work 6 days a week. If I tell you a tool is good to go, you can take it to the bank.

Did you guys buy Knipex when they sold it ? Or when they went closeout? The problem was people didnt buy them before they went closeout. I bought a couple Knipex and Channellock pliers when they sold them. I bought the rest of my Knipex and Channellock stuff when they went closeout because i could now afford them. I dont understand the southwire line because the prices are Knipex prices but Chinese tools. They are even more expensive than some of the Channellock pliers. If they didn't sell Knipex at those prices they surely are not selling China Southwire tools at the same price.
