Is this a Stanley no 4 handplane type 11? Also I have disassembled it and was wondering why the screw for the long handle won't come off. I was also wondering if the knob bolt somehow broke on my plane or if it was supposed to remain permanently bolted like that. Also I am using simply green to clean it is this a bad idea? After cleaning it I did give it a bath of wed-40 to prevent rust. Sorry for the long winded questions. And thanks in advance for your guys help!

simple green will be fine. vinegar is a good rust remover. do you have a bench grinder by chance or a drill press? if so put a wire wheel on it and it will help to clean the metal parts up nicely. as for the bottom of the plane and side of the base, get a known flat surface like a table saw and put a piece of sand paper on it, like a 150-180 grit. run the bottom and sides on the sand paper until clean. will help to flatten out of flat parts as well.

Check the woodworking thread for multiple people restoring planes (ive posted a few in the last month). Also there are a ton of good videos on youtube.

as for the knob rod, get a set of pliers and twist it out.

The knob stud could be friction threaded so it stays in place ,ie, plane heated, stud chilled when putting together or loctited . try double nutting it ( 2 nuts tightened up on each other) and see if it moves .

How many 12-20 nuts do you have around? That's a special thread there. The stud should come out if you grab it in the middle with a good pair of pliers.
