RUN AWAY! FAR FAR AWAY! - I got these as a gift a while back, tried to use 4 different bits to make a hole in a 1/8" Plate and I made it about a 1/6" in and had completely rounded, dull, and bent bits.

The drill bits came this afternoon, and with much trepidation I selected a random sample and chucked the first one in the press, drilling through some mild steel I had laying around.

I figured if they sucked I would get on woot immediately and arrange a return- so sooner is better.

No problem. They seem very sharp and drilled through easily, as well or better than the Rigid bits. Industrial? Probably not. But for my purposes they will work fine.

Nice follow up. Will you drill ten holes with one size and report back? I wonder what the longevity is?

Thanks,

OK, so back out to the drill press. Picked out a 3/16ths bit.

I found these scissors, that had peeved me for the last time this morning, in the trashcan. Seven holes and ran out of room, no oil, most of the holes thru two layers of stainless. Made some smoke, and the scissors got hot.

I figured that told me all I needed to know, but decided to sacrifice a thick fender washer (I sure hope I don't need that later) and drilled a few more holes, again no oil. The drill didn't show any sign of slowing down or getting dull. The washer was too hot to touch when I finished.

If you can find a good deal on cobalt instead of titanium coated bits, the cobalt seem to me to be worth the extra money.

My set must have been made with lead then... I think I still have them in the attic somewhere, I should see if I can find them and try and drill a pair a scissors with them. What speed were you drilling at?

Drill press makes cheap bits work about as well as good bits in a hand drill.

I have a set of these or very similar I got at Menards for 9.99.

They got no problem drilling wood and plastic, never used them on steel because I have other drill sets. But it's pretty sweet that you can get a whole **** load of 1/8" and 1/16" drills for next to nothing. Even a 1/2" drill. I think they are worth the price of admission.

Off topic, but Criminal, where did you bet that 1911 mat? Looks slick.
I picked it up at Sportsman's Warehouse in town- they had several different ones for different firearms. I was actually surprised they still had a 1911 one left. I think they were around $25.

As for the drill bits; still no complaints. Our community mailbox post was rotted away and about to fall over; the post is some strong 4x4 box tubing with a flange welded on the bottom- the flange was rusted out. To fix it, I needed to drill two ½" holes in the post with my deWalt 20V hand drill. I used a smaller bit to get a pilot hole, then moved up to the ½" bit, no problems.
