I took the easy route and bought a craftsman one that matches my box. I got it on sale then got another discount for getting a sears credit card which I will pay off and cancel.

I just found this site too, lots of good reading so far!
I wanted the same thing, a workbench to put my toolbox under. I decided to design and build my own.
Here's what I ened up with:

The top is a coutertop from Lowe's, whatever they had on clearance at the time.
A few weeks ago we built a 6-foot bench to the right and I've bolted down my drill press and vise. Need to take a few shots of that...

I used that exact same top for my bar/kegorator!

I'm picking up the plywood for the top of my new bench tomorrow, and should be done builing by tomorrow afternoon. What has everyone used to seal the tops of wooden benches? Shellac, varnish, polly or something else that I'm not thinking of?

Thanks.

That's funny. It's the one I'm building. I just made it a little longer (6' instead of 4').

Matt

I made both of mine 6 ft long as well.

Nice job. Is that glass or plexiglass?

Thanks KC. It's plexiglass. Worst part about it is that it attracts a lot of grinding dust.

I made the first one using Simpson Tie's workbench kit. Its 4ft wide and 2.5ft deep. The top is 1" faux butcher block.

I then got rid of it because it wasn't wide enough and maybe a tad bit too deep. I built a second one using recycled 2x4s and 3/4" plywood, its 6ft wide and 2ft deep and its hanging off the wall.

I like covering the top of the workbench with a piece of 1/4" tempered hardboard. Just fasten it down around the edges with screws or nails. It's pretty cheap, it has a nice smooth surface that's more resistant to oil and grease, and when it finally gets beat up you can toss it and get a new piece.

Thanks for the advice Stuart - but it's a bit late! Hopefully here's a picture of what I'm just about done....

Here's the frame. I wanted a shelf under the bench, but also wanted a place where I could tuck away the shop vac....

Here's a picture of the almost completed bench. The first of 4 coats of polyurethane is on the top, and after the 4th coat is dry, I'll mount my bench vice.

It's 6 feet long (the bottom shelf is 4 feet), and 2 feet deep.

I just got done building my bench and was wondering what to cover the 3/4" top. So today I went to albright steel here in OKC and picked up a 4' X 10" sheet of 24 ga galvanized for 27.00. I thought it would be alot more than that. Im going to wrap the 3/4" with that and hopefully it will hold up for me.

byrdman, how old are the two Skilsaws in your pictures?

A+ job on the cabinets and bench. I may build some storage like your corner cabinet in my classroom.
Coach

James, thanks for the compliment! That miter saw is my Dad's, I'd say it's at least 10 years old if not more. The handheld is 4 years old.
