Hi everybody! I did a search and didn't come up with much. First-time homeowner, and have a rather large attached garage (25' wide, 28' deep). I want to build a workbench along the back wall, and integrate storage under it (including a wire rack for wire spools). Does anybody have any tips or tricks on building a SOLID workbench that both won't move, and won't break? I tend to be rough on things. My dads shop uses a workbench built with 2x12's. I was thinking a well braced 2x4 frame with 1" plywood on top. This will be used for engine work, trans work, etc., and will get banged on pretty good, Will have a bench vice mounted to it. Heavy things will probably be dropped on it. I don't like steel tables. Any tips guys? Thanks a bunch, and can't wait to start joining the community :)

I built mine out of 2x4's and anchored them to both the floor and the wall of the shop. There are 2x4's running the entire length and they are anchored to the floor. I then made doors out of plywood and have a plywood floor about 3 1/2" off of the floor. They are rock solid. I used quite a few spanners using 2x4's across the top because nothing ***** more than the workbench bowing in between your cross braces when you are trying to work on something heavy. I then installed 3/4' plywood and topped it all off with 1/8" stainless steel rolled under in the front to keep your clothes from catching and no sharp edges, as well as I had it turned up a few inches at the back of the workbench to keep things from getting between the metal top and the wall. I then added an electrical strip across the back section.
