Theres a bunch of boot threads but nobody mentions socks. Iv got "Boot" socks that are made for tall boots. I wear them with my cowboy boots, theyre really tough but arent great for wearing all day at work. I tried the Dr. Scholl's Diabetes & Circulatory socks and they were pretty comfortable. I think my favorites right now are the Dr. Scholl's Careers socks. They have good arch support and no seams on the inside of the socks. Pretty much the best sock iv ever worn. Is there anything better out there that im missing? Whats the deal with wool sock? Do they get hot? I live in Texas.

During the winter I use British Army Socks (green and reach your knees and about 1/2 inch think mixture of wool and some kind of itchy plastic), we might be in deep decline as a world power but we know all there is to know about cold wet feet. They last way better than all that fancy stuff you can get for hiking and mountain climbing.

I wear merino wool socks maybe 360 days a year. With work boots I usually go for a medium or heavy weight.

And no, they're not itchy at all. Started off with SmartWool and then tried Darn Tough and a few other brands recently.

Dicikies, Wigwam, and Snap On socks here. Wear them all day. Always comfortable. I've also got a couple pairs of Justin boot socks for when I wear my cowboy boots.

i have a couple dozen or so pairs of the smartwool socks that i wear with danner super rain forests or mountain light hikers. there are snowboarding, mountaineering, and skiing, and several other styles that are high enough for boots. i've been wearing them for about five or six years and rarely look at other brands. great all day and in all temperatures with no odor. and they are extremely durable.

in my experience, they are the best socks on the market.

The white ones that are in a big pack. Whatever brand, cheap is better cause either my dryer or the goblin that lives under the bed disappears them faster than I can buy them.

I picked up 3 pairs of columbia coolmax or something socks at a shoe store about a year ago. They were on clearance so i figured i'd give them a shot. Best summer work socks imo.

I wear Fox River Merino wool socks from Fall to spring. It gets cold here, I wear un-insulated "wellingtons" or some might call them working mans cowboy boots. I work in a lightly heated shop, snow, mud, and animal dong daily, so Ive almost always have boots on. The other thing I love about these socks, its they "stay up" and don't wind up down around my ankles like all the other wool socks Ive bought.

They keep my feet warm and dry. Ive got bad circulation to the hands and feet. The socks are not cheap, but they are made in Iowa. I have bought better and more expensive socks, but don't remember who made them. I picked them up in a sporting goods store in California years back. Probably made for back packing or hiking, they where $20 a pair 10 years ago, but still have them, and they still perform.

The pic is of the socks I got at the sporting goods store, that I dont remember who made, but I really like them,...

At the beginning of last year's winter season, I was also in this same boat trying to score a good work sock (preferrable something thicker, maybe even wool...) I was told of SmartWool but still, didn't feel like dropping $15 for a PAIR of socks just yet. So, one day at Wally world, I was getting some t-shirts and spotted some nice looking, soft Faded Glory work socks that were a bunch of cocktailed fabrics and at the end, they were a 5% wool make-up.
I tried them seeing as they were like $7 for two pair!
They're really not too bad. They're comfortable in my Timberland Pro Pitt Boss' and seem to be wearing slowly to my surprise. I do wish they were a little more proactive at displacing the moisture, but other than that, the 5% wool is nice.
Not to HJ the OP thought, but socks that are rated at 10-20% wool, are they considerably warmer as in 'feet sweat warmer?' And another thing, after I wear them for a while at work, my feet have like a weird warm tingling sensation inside the socks. It almost feels like my feet are sitting in somewhat hot water or being exposed to steam. It's not uncomfortable but it's odd. Is that just the wool keeping the heat in???

weirdly, i don't see them on costco.com's website, but their kirkland brand merino wool / synthetic blend socks freaking rock. like someone said, i wear them 360 days a year, the other 5 i'm probably wearing flipflops at the beach. they breath great so even my stanky dogs aren't too bad. much cheaper than any of the 'hiker' wool socks that i've ever found, and perform better. i'm in 10" motorcycle boots 3/4 of the year so they HAVE to breath, especially in the summer.

HI, I WAS A WOOL GRADER YEARS AGO HOPEFULLY MY INFO WILL BE GOOD FOR U.

WOOL IS A HOLLOW FIBER WHICH WILL RETAIN HEAT WHEN WET (U WILL NOTICE THE COLD INSTANTLY WHEN WET SOCKS ARE TAKEN OFF) AND COOL WHEN HOT.

WOOL IS IDEAL FOR AIRCRAFT TRAVEL (IF THERE A ONBOARD FIRE IT WILL NOT MELT ON2 YOU LIKE NAPALM) ITS ALSO IDEAL FOR WELDING AND ALSO USED IN FIREMANS CLOTHING AS IT ONLY SMOLDERS.

HAND WASH WOOL GARMENTS IN COLD WATER ONLY, USING NATURAL SOAP / DETERGENT NOT YOUR NORMAL LAUNDERY POWDER....WOOL BEING A CALCIUM /BONE TYPE PROTEIN BREAKS DOWN FROM CHEMICALS IN DETERGENT.

THERE IS NO NEED TO BUY THORLO OR THE FANCY HI PRICED SOCKS FROM IRELAND ETC.

NEW ZEALAND AND AUSSIE ARE THE WORLD LEADERS IN WOOL PRODUCTION,PROCESSING AND TYPES PRODUCED....AND EVEN LEADS AND PRODUCE 90% OF WORLDS WOOL SCOURING EQUIPMENT. I WORKED BRIEFLY FOR THE CO-FOUNDER DAVE ANNETT WHOM STARTED ANNETT & DARLING WHICH IS NOW "ANDARS" OWNED BY THE AUSSIE WOOL BOARD.

THE SOCKS I USE IS CALLED ...FARM FLECK,GUMBOOT AND HIGH COUNTRY. (NORSEWEAR)...THE FARM FLECK LASTS FOR YEARS.

EMAIL THESE FINE MAKERS..... NEW ZEALAND SOCK CO ASHBURTON.

I wear Wigwam 85% merino wool all year round when wearing boots. I only wear cotton when wearing sneakers after work. I wear the wool when I wear sneakers when its cool too.

they make "hikers" which are a lighter weight, and a heavier model for real cold days. great for hunting too! comfortable in summer as they do wick moisture very well. no itch with the merino wool either.

One thing I do for all my socks (Wigwam, Snap-On [which are really good]), is I line dry them. No dryer. They last a heck of a lot longer that way.

I'm on my feet in a shop a lot of the day, in dirty and crappy conditions, so good socks are worth it to me.

smartwool makes the best socks. Period. Their market is hiking and backpacking and they have a fanatical following. Smartwool >>>> thorlo. And yeah, they are stupid expensive, but try one pair. And try some superfeet insoles for your shoes while you're at it.

I shattered my heel, now all I pretty much where is wool hiking socks. Light wool in the summer. No they are not hot. I think they are cooler then thick cotton socks.

I wear Wigwam, made in WI.

they are cooler than cotton, because wool is a wicking material. wool pulls the sweat away from your feet, while cotton just leaves your feet stewing in your sweat.

wool and gore-tex are the best in all seasons. wearing cotton socks in the summer is the worst.

Over on Amazon they are complaing that the socks get holes in them rather quickly, what is your experiance?

I am very hard on shoes and socks, I have a couple of thick Timberlake socks and they start to get holes after a few month.

And I know it's a older thread but I did not wanted to start a new one. :)

i got as a gift - don't ask - a pair of the smartwool socks. and i found the costco ones to be both (a LOT) cheaper, and just as, if not a little more, durable. they do wear out, but i am brutal on socks and almost always wear a hole under the big toe in fairly short order. haven't done that yet with the costco ones. the costco socks do seem to lose their pile (get thinner) with use, and i have thrown away some pairs that are now 2-3 years old. i think they get $14 for 4 pair, but not positive about that. worn year round in anything other than dress shoes or flip flops :)

Wow, 2-3 year old socks that does not happen with my work socks.

Do you know how true they run with their sizes and where they are made?

Thank you

Fox River "monkey" socks - these are the toughest of the tough, and comfortable in 20F temperatures as well as 110F. Made in USA and still relatively cheap at around $5 a pair.

You can get them at www.ironworkergear.com and support a really cool American small business.

Who are you referring to?

Animal dong vs dung. Being ankle-deep in animal dongs all day lends itself to a very unpleasant picture.

I like Stoic ankle socks for the summer, various brand wool socks in the winter. With heavy socks, liner socks are an absolute must and make things much nicer, especially if your feet have a tendency to sweat.

Snap on socks

+1
Im unsure if this was sarcasm or honest input, but snap on socks are awesome! I have about a dozen pair, and the only way I destroyed any of them was when I had a ****** pair of boots(timberland pro, may have be decent but they were not as the sales person said) and molten metal would burn through boot, sock, them my foot. The girlfriend loves when i grab a pink pair for her.

I have some wigwam socks but mostly red wing socks. I prefer the red wing socks. Nice and thick and last a long time, just not made for tall boots.

I've been wearing the Wigwam uniform S1233 socks for the last decade or so. Before that I went online and bought a dozen or so different kinds of premiums socks and tried them out. Mixed results, except I learned I absolutely am NOT one size fits all, I need the XL 13-15 shoe size socks.

Smartwool seemed too tight, mil spec were too tight between heel and top of foot. USPS socks were really nice, 100% cotton with a thick mushy sole, but would bunch up a little sometimes (too loose maybe).

I did like some of the $12 each socks like Thorlo and SmartWool, but my son steals my socks and for awhile had some problem with his boots that ate socks right and left.

Time to buy some more after the holidays, but not a guess at what I may get, except maybe more the Wigwam.

If I wear a boot I use three layers of socks, a thin, a cotton, heavy wool.

Like shoes, socks are important...in my long outdoor working career in all weather I have tried a myriad of socks..

My wife was in a "Runnings" store, similar to a Tractor Supply or a Menards and purchased a pack of Socks with the brand name being "RailRoad Socks". Best reasonably priced socks I ever wore, in the grey color with the correct workboots on, my feet never sweated or were cold. I don't wear socks much anymore but I still grab these whether it's an occasional wearing of a workboot or a pair of pull on dress boots.

Darn Tough are a little pricey but definitely worth it and it you happen to wear a hole in one they will send you a new pair.

I actually just bought 3 dozen pairs of rail road socks in crew. After trying a pair they were so comfortable, didn't bind at the top, are usa made and less than 2$ per pair. They make all types, merino wool included, but the cheap grey crew socks are perfect and at that price throw away when worn. I never heard of rail road socks brand, found them in runnings and I really like that the cuff didn't bite into my leg, I have boots on for 14 hrs a day.

I wear nothing and I mean nothing but Feetures. I turned into a sock snob around 2007 and have tried all types and brands and Feetures are my favorite. I wear them 365 days a year unless I somehow skip a day because I never put shoes on. Oh and they have a lifetime warranty
