Work garage vs Show garage?

Hey fellas... This isn't an argument worth having is it?

They are both fun to look at and we will continue to feature both types of garages... In my opinion, you need to have an open mind to both as there are a lot of great ideas with both types...

And for those that don't think you can get work done in a clean shop, you haven't spent much time in a F1 garage... Those places are like medical labs and more serious fabrication gets done there than any home shop in the country... Promise.

I have a working shop, I try to clean, sweep, organize and hide what I can, but at the end of the day it is only going to look so good! Oh well, so be it, I have done my best with limited resources. With that said, I still love seeing what those with very deep pockets and clearly unlimited funds compared to me are able to afford. It always gives me something to dream about and try to shoot for. (even if I know my shop will never look that tidy)

There is a fine line between the two. Just because a guy has alot of stuff and its messy doesnt mean hes getting anything done. Take my freind for example. He just throws stuf fon his workbench and does most of his work on the floor. I cant stand working like that, and cant get anything done.

On the other hand, Somebody can spend 10k$ on race deck and lista cabinets but still struggle to change his own oil. I guess it all comes down to how much money you have and are willing to put where in the shop.

Working vs. Show
A working garage is one where you get work completed. It can be both clean or dirty dependent upon the inhabitant. Working garage is NOT synomonous (sp?) with dirty.

Show garage. This is usually a play/party place and not necessarily where work gets completed. In my neighborhood there is a whole street of "show" garages. Pool tables, soft furniture, neon signs, etc. I seriously doubt that you could get work done in any of them because there is no place to put the tools and objects to be worked on. In fact in most the cars are parked outside. With the heat we have to live in AZ, this is not a wise use of space if you don't want to blister your hands when you get in the car to drive it.

That's my nickle's worth.
And Ryan, where's the Spell Checker? Some of us are passable spellers, but occasionally need help.

Heck, just driving the cars,bikes and lawn tractors in and out will trash a garage in no time. Not to mention oil changes,grease jobs,tire rotation. Even if you don't build a car in your garage it's going to get dirty. Oh,did I mention spilled beer ????

I always start out with the intentions of building a "show/work" shop. Never happens. It ends up getting trashed cause I love to buy junk and fabricate. It's a sickness.

A shop can be both for show and heavy fabrication but it takes work... My shop is pretty showy, but if I dont complete my fabrication work, theres no money for a nice shop.
About 1 1/2 years ago I got a huge job, and to fit it in the shop I had to cut off the top halves of all my buildings (see the "Strange Days tour" post) cut down my overhead crane, and notch my shop framing. Talk about depressing.
This was the only way to fit a full size park carousel mechanism in the shop.
Fact is -Very few folks do more work in their "work" shop than I do in my "show" shop.
Its a lot more work to keep up a "show" shop, but some of us are up to the task. It isnt an either-or deal. To denigrate those that have nice stuff and care for it is a bit ingenuous. Some of us work DAMN hard to have a nice place.

Chaz: So who is denigrating? not me, check my post. More power to ya man if you have the resources and wherewithall to make it happen, so much the better!
I am satisfied to admire all the pics of the killer looking garages posted on this site as I am sure many others are too! I looked at your pics, your place looked great! And I can tell a lotta work gets done there. By the way, welcome to the site!
