Work Shop table

I have always had work benches on wall in all garages. But I am thinking this time to build a work table in middle of shop area. Storage and tools along the walls. Anyone have ideas for this or pics even better!

I keep an old Ikea table (wood top, removeable legs) for this purpose. Imagine, Mrs Outlander wanted me to throw it away.

I have looked at many work benches on here..but I just want table options. I'm not talented enough to use workbench ideas for table application. I'm a visual learner. Thanks

Making my usual mistakes I put cabinets above all my bench. No place to work on taller projects, so I had to build something. This worked pretty well. I had an old cheap folding router table that I robbed the center plate, switch, & switch bar from. The rest is 3/4 ply, 2 X 4, a little trim, & four casters from Harbor Freight.

Decades ago I also needed a stout work bench in the middle of my woodworking shop. I fabricated a 5' x 5' bench top using D.F. construction remnants I laminated together and covered it with T & G oak flooring, which gave me 4" thickness. I supported this on heavy timber legs and skids on the bottom. Afterwards I mounted a large woodworking vise and pull-out storage drawers to this bench and it has served me well for most of my life. I chose not to put wheels on the bench in order that it remain the heavy and solidly positioned unit I needed for the type of work to be done over the years.

Bob: here's a bench (white painted frame) i'm planning on building that can be moved around if you want to put the casters on it. my neighbor built the other bench without the hydraulics and the top is 26 x 63 inches.

i'll get you a material list if you might like it just ask.

FLU: i didn't build the white painted table, but i'm planning on building 2 of them a little smaller once my welder/neighbor gets off his summer of riding his new motorcycle. the actual white framed bench was on the cover of Garage Journal maybe 1.5 or 2 years ago and i saved the pictures. there were not any specs. so you can make up your own or use the ones i think i put in my thread. my neighbor has built one table that he is received the 3/4 inch steel top from me for doing the welding on mine as he has time. i told him i wasn't in a hurry and anytime this year was ok so probably a fall project.

it is steel top and i'm using 3/4 inch that is 63 inch x 26 inch and having a 1.5 or two inch overhang for clamping. i'm going to make mine out of 3 x 3 inch square 1/4 inch thick tubing and probably angle iron for the supports. my neighbors table was made with 3/16 2 inch square tubing.

since i'm 6'3" i'll probably make the bench tops 38 or 39 inches off the floor and i'll measure just at my elbows for a comfortable height.

I use old kitchen and bath vanities. Turn them into very servicable work tables. This one was picked up by the side of the road.
Looked like this when I got it home. The pic was taken after I had installed the casters

Thius is what I ended up with after a few coats of paint, adding the 2 x 6 risers and a 1/4" steel top.

Here it is being used to weld up a wagon frame.

This bench gets used and abused almost everyday and it cost me less then a 100 bucks to build including the 1/4" steel top. The overhang provides al sorts of room for clamping and adding vises.

The steel table in the middle used to sit where the big blue lathe sits. Moving the table to the middle really improved work flow and ease of use.

I rebuilt mine a year ago or so making the top slightly bigger and stronger.

It started with base cabinets.



Top frame work.

3/4" plywood inlaid.

I took 4 Knaack tool cabinets....roll-a-ways. Two end to end and two on the other side of end to end. So there are 2 wide and 2 deep. I placed 2- 30" x 96" red oak butcher block counter tops on the 4 cabinets. I love it. It measures 5'x8', on casters, I can move it. I am real happy with it.

I have had assembly tables in the past that were the same height as my table saw.

With the saw set up toward one end, it makes a great out feed table.

My garage is the typical "cars in the middle with benches, toolboxes and cabinets around the perimeter", but in my basement I built this 4' x 8' table. I keep nail guns, saws, sanders and other more wood related tools under it on the included shelf. The pegboard is for big and/or oddball stuff like squares, levels and claw hammers, fishtape...basically homeowner stuff. The shelves on two sides are nails, screws, ammo, and paint/drywall/plumbing/electrical/etc. stuff and other random storage. The "clean" pics were just after I moved in. The last pic shows a lateral file and two old Craftsman Rallye boxes eventually added to the end of the table so I have a set basic mechanics tools close and don't have to make a trip to the garage. It's a close up because the table has about 5 projects going on it....but it is just slightly narrower than the 4' end of the table.

This looks pretty much identical to mine-----at least the top construction. I don't know how you did your's, but I used 2 layers of 3/4 ply and a layer of 1/4" Masonite smooth side up, edge-banded with 3/4" Oak. Top finished with several coats of penetrating oil finish. Any glue drips pop right off when dry, surface is extremely tough, yet won't hurt edge tools.

As youhave noticed, it is a popular thing to do.
Like mine many have casters.
Mine are only 2x4, but are the same height.
I rarely use my work bench any more.
The mobilty lets me set things up as needed and large projects can be done with a couple of 2x4s bridging the 2 tables.
