Workbench back-board ideas??

I have an 8' long bench for general work. Looking for ideas to hang hand tools, levels, clamps, small shelf, etc. Really don't care for standard pegboard as it does not hold up well in temperature / humidity swings and hooks falling out unless use those clippy things; Slatwall is a consideration.

Thinking of just maybe a full sheet of sanded 3/4 plywood and using pre-made and custom made brackets. Lots of stuff out there. Should be plenty strong and easy to move items in future.

Any ideas / thoughts / pictures?

thank you

I used 3/4 Birch plywood from Lowes on my benches. It's still in process, but you can see pics in my journal (link in my signature). I will be mounting various things to it, lighter stuff just into the plywood, heavier items will find studs.

You can see some cabinets hung on cleats and shelves hung on pre-made brackets.

Good luck with your project.

I installed a bit of the Wall Control product in early December above my workbench. I spent a couple weeks deciding what I wanted as far as brackets, shelving, containers, etc.. I'm pleased with the system and how it turned out. I have no concerns about the durability of the product and am pleased with the Wall Control hardware. Install was very easy.

I've actually found pegboard to be pretty useful. I went with aluminum since I had similar concerns with temperature/humidity swings in my garage. This has been up for about 7-ish years at this point:

I have 8x4 sheets, 18mm? thick behind my workbenches. They were painted with garage floor paint.

Tools are hung on screws, hooks and clips. Works well for me for tools that are used constantly, other tools are still in drawers. You can position tools wherever you want. My most used tools are centered on my work stand. Some tools are clustered at areas for specific jobs

i had a few nice vids from "wood by wright" show up on my youtube suggestions. He has a lot of planes so did a holder for them. also chisels. might give you some ideas. i have a similar weather as you and have found pegboard does fine. nice as i can easily change the layout. i have a cabinet with the middle of the doors as pegboard. the shelves inside are narrow so i have stuff on both sides of the pegboard. i really like their hammer holders. not that there are cheap pegboard holders and thicker ones. also like the horizontal holders for screwdrivers and such.

Looks great! What is the distance between the top of the work bench and the bottom of the cabinets?

Thanks,

Rich

Use 1/4’ thick pegboard with appropriate hangers and you won’t have any problems...

Very cool shop. Would love to see more. Is there a thread with a tour?

The pegboard is 24". From the top of the bench surface to the bottom of the cabinets is 25". The undercabinet lighting hangs down about an inch.

My bench is very much a work in progress but I went for the cheap option - pegboard. The lower cost was a benefit but not the only reason as I was originally planning on slatwall as I am doing some in other parts of the garage but ultimately for a 20" height, I would only have 3-4 vertical selections of where I could hang things, and decided I wanted a more granular ability to organize.

Most of my tools live in boxes - I just wanted to have a few "household" items accessible for a quick job here or there around the house. With that said - the hooks drive me a little nuts, they fall out very easily. I like that the pegboard looks finished and gives my area a little bit of polish as this is an existing house garage and not one I intend to paint the entire garage for, etc.

Hope that helps,
Mark

Pegboard works just fine if, as already mentioned, you use 1/4" board and use 1/4 hooks. They will not fall out. I find mine are often a bit of a discussion to remove.

If you use 1/8 hooks in 1/4 board then yes they will fall out.

If you use 1/8 hook and 1/8 board it will be too weak for heavier stuff.

I mounted mine on 1 x 2 located on the studs and then used adjustable shelf holders for the shelves.
There are a few things I should have done differently such as painting the pegboard but I won't now. Also I would have put it right to the ceiling and then used another piece for the last 8-10" above my bench.

As for holding up in temperature swings I have never had that trouble and I have been using the stuff for close to 30 years. My garage has SOME heat but is not warm. I use a fan to force air circulation as the humidity can be very high where I live but the pegboard is just fine.

If you actually wet it then I can understand.

As for the bench itself I simply installed a 3" high curb around the back and two ends so stuff does not get pushed off. THe bench top is 2" maple.

Wall Control for me, too.

Wall Control Above Bench.jpg

I also put it in my utility room, a small utility closet/entrance to the crawlspace and in our shed. It's really nice, quality stuff.

I chose something different. I bought enough 12" drawer units to go all the way down my 16' bench. I keep quite a lot of things sorted and in order that way.
