So I have a "Costco Special" 8 ft. Whalen workbench as pictured below.

I'd like to add some storage underneath it, but not all the way to the floor. I was considering using some indermediate tool chests and attaching them to the underside of the bench top. Something like these Gladiators.

They seem reasonably sturdy and not too expensive. Any other ideas?

Sams - I was thinking about either stripping the top out of the Seville tool box or using the roll away.

Thought about it, as I have 6 intermediate drawer boxes just laying around.
Decided it was better to just go with the full size box under the bench.
After looking into all the different ways to hang a box, I just didn't want to invest that much work for that little storage.

Since all six intermediate boxes have lips around the top (for top boxes) you would need to cut a plywood/particle board 'spacer' to fit the top, then drill multiple holes in the box, spacer. In the top of the box, above the top drawer, in the lid, you would need a large spacer, either a big piece of wood or metal strips, with matching holes, as the sheet metal of the boxes would not like being hung fully loaded.
So doable, but more than a little work.
Then you would have to use lag bolts, etc. to anchor the hanging box to the bottom of the bench.

Alternatively, you could use angle iron, build frames to hold the box. Sturdier, no modifying the boxes.

I decided not to bother, picked up a 36" wide KIQ SnapOn box, pulled the wheels and shoved it under the bench.
Works great, cost about 100 bucks.

Hi Adrien:
I'm interested in that 8' Whalen workbench. I went to our local Costco and they do not have them in the store. So I couldn't look at one nor measure it.

Could I ask you to measure the distance between the inside of the legs, in the front? I have two of the US General 42" Roll Cabinets and I'd like to put them both under that bench if possible. I'd need about 84.5 inches.

I see from the pictures that the 8' top overhangs the legs, so there is less than 96 inches between them.

thanks,
Carl B.

Unless you really have a need to store things under the bench, why not go all out and put a tool chest there? I got a modular geardrawers from Gladiator that I am in love with...check out the pics...Although expensive I hunted it down on craigslist and got one brand new for $280.

I contacted Whalen to see if they could provide the dimensions between the front legs - on their 8' Workbench. Turns out they haven't make any of them for the past year. The Customer Service Rep. said that there "might" be a few in some Costco stores... but that was a long shot.

FWIW,

Damn. I was hoping to pick up another one down the road. Do you still want the dimensions?

Something like these from global?

Those are perfect. Do you know a source for them?

Well, I finally got around to tackling this. I was in Sears yesterday and happened to find this intermediate chest for $40 plus 10% off for being the display.
