Have any of you fellas ever added shallow pull-out drawers to your workbenches, similar to what you'd find on a desk? I'd like to do this to organize small items on a bench I just made from salvaged 2/4s and 4/4s. I am curious how to mount the slides to the 2/4 supports on the underside of the bench. I'm not very good at visualizing things that I haven't done before.

I've never done it on a workbench, but I have built a few vanities and desks before. I added an extra piece of wood, either from front to back or top to bottom to mount the slides to.

i used an old drawer i had from my kitchen remodel under my reloading bench to hold primer conversions.
mines a simple 3 sided box, thats attached to the bottom of the bench. the drawers has no side rails on it, just sits on the bottom of the 3 sided box.

Here's a lil something for you. Post a picture of the underside of your workbench for some more ideas.

I built this one from 1/2" plywood and 6 2" x 4" uprights for legs. Plywood is all dadoed and fit together and glued, some drawer detail in photos. You could make the drawers smaller:

Bull,
This bench that we just acquired has 1960's standard craftsman drawers/slides installed back then. The fellow was pretty finicky and must have spent a lot of time (more than MY patience would allow :) to complete it.
He mounted the slide receivers on 3/4" plywood verticals that are well braced.
I think I would have figured a way to install a complete sidebox in the bench instead though as it would be much less work
The 8 drawers are still solid/smooth after 40 years though...
Right side has 2 HUGE wooden drawers that he made. We just painted the fronts black.

That work bench is awesome...

Thanks,
I actually built 2 of them at the same time. Once you set up the saw for each piece it's just as easy to make 2 sets as one. I built them in 1978 and used it professionally for 32 years in my shop. When I retired I took this one home and rehabed it. here's 3 shots of me using it in 1988 and a couple of it at home now:

Here is one, made up for my work bench, a box with drawers that slides in place after it is completed. No fancy stuff, the drawers slide on "sticks in grooves" that were router cut. Lube the slides with a candle and they are ready for the heaviest work you can throw at them. I like shallow drawers, they tend to stay neater. It was all made from salvaged wood, kept the best for the drawer fronts.

I just built this bench this week. I bought the drawer at Lowes on clearance for $5. I mounted the rails on 2x8 wood so the drawer would hang low enough.

Check out some of the woodworking sites....plenty of premade stuff...

You might want to check out some office surplus stores....the drawers that go on some of the sectional office desks are just bolt on drawers.

I don't know how shallow you want to go, but the old type setting drawers that held loose type for the printing trades are great for storing small items. The drawers are wide, have partitions built in and they hold a ton of small items.

Here's how I did mine. Ball bearing slides came from Menards and are screwed to 2x4s that are screwed to the inner-wall of the cabinet.
