Workbench idea

New guy here from Virginia. A few years ago I bought a center island for my kitchen from Ikea. It was $349 with a solid wood top. The thing is heavy duty and as I remember a bear to assemble-reading the directions probably would have shaved a few hours off the assembly. The base unit is 69.25" L x 25.625" W x 35.375" Ht. A good work height for standing or stool etc.
I am having a house built and the wife will have her two-car attached and I am finally getting my own shop. It's a 24 x 32 shop/garage. I may buy a few of these Ikea benches for my new space since I already know how well-built they are. With a few slight mods a vise could be mounted etc.

Looks rather substantial, will it stand up to a vise and pounding well though?

How thick is the top?
There are plenty of workbenches out there for $350 though.

Sam's & costco sell height adjustable steel frame workbenches with 1.5" - 1.75" thick maple tops for ~$200

Actually now that you mentioned it I think you could get Sears very best mechanic bench for a like amount of money, made of steel of course.

Anyway, don't doubt there are better benches out there. When reality sinks in ($$) I will probably build some benches.

Are you taking the one you have in your kitchen with you to your new home? If you weren't planning on it, you just solved your workbench problem with the one you have now!! Having had one for 27 years (wife, that is) I suspect that with a new house, new cabinetry is generally requested (demanded). Even if you decide not to use it in your workshop/garage, it'd be nice in the attched for fixin' things when you don't want to go to your detached shop. IKEA makes some nice stuff. I've bought a couple of beds from them for the kids over the years and was usually pretty satisfied.
