I find a big majority of the work I need my tools and fasteners for is distant from the workbench in the garage. I'm surprised that Milwaukee or one of the big guys hasn't come up with a bench that stores portable toolboxes as drawers with open tops that can be pulled out with a cover of some kind and carried to the place you need to do the work. Has anybody here figured this one out?

FESTOOL uses the (TANOS) SYStainer which is a "standardized" dimension for all their tools. You can get hardware & consumable sorters, dividers, etc. The audience this system serves is the mobile tradesman who works out of a van. People have gotten wildly creative with how to store their systainers and a guy on Youtube a few years ago made a very slick bench integrated into a handtruck that carried his systainers. His design has since been copied by Festool and Kreg.

If it's more of a mechanic type shop environment, toolcarts have become very popular with technicians in larger shops to hold their most used tools. If you look in any aviation shop, you're not likely to see a box taller than bench height, as they are almost always wheeled to the job and have to fit under the wings of planes. These environments are assumed to be smooth concrete of course.

Or you could go the way of the Hazet Assistent - An internet and tool forum sensation and perennial favorite among most.

If it's fasteners on-the-go you seek, Durham and many others have you covered

There's also the "work top" for the packout boxes. More of a portable table idea than a work bench though. I suppose you could bridge two of them with a countertop - but that seems silly because (unless you used the drawer boxes), you would need to disassemble to get things out.

Maybe a tool cart with the tools you need most in it so you can roll to the work bench and then maybe make an occasional run back to the box instead of each time.

Milwaukee is geared towards the construction industry and we build work surfaces all the time using two saw horses and what ever material is laying around.

the other option that we use is one of the 2’x4’ folding tables

this sounds like a job for a taco cart!
