My dad has a workbench set up using a shelf connecting two palette racks from Home Depot. Right now the surface is just the wire mesh shelf that comes in the box. What should I place on top for a smooth, solid working surface?

Doesn’t need to support tons of weight or anything like a vice—-it’s actually a secondary work surface just for when he wants to sit or the primary is already in use.

Measures about 71.5” x 21.5”.

Looked at Lowe’s but didn’t see much...just some 2’ x 4’ MDF that was too small.

What should I get and where can I find it?

Hardboard? 1/8 4x8 sheets are $9 at home depot, 3/16 is $14 and something cents.
Smoother than MDF or any other wood sheet good over there.

You could find a used solid core door for cheap on craigslist etc . You could get a 22 or 24 inch wide and have a little overhang and just cut to length . You can always add a thin piece of plywood and a coat of stain if you care how it looks.

Not that I want it, just one of the few things I saw that seemed like it could work.

Sounds like you need to be more specific of what "works" for you. There's all kinds of different grades of plywood, smooth faced solid core doors, etc in that Lowes store.
