40x48x16 shop wanting to build a 2' wide workbench, probably make it 24' long, and then build a 5 or 6' veranda over top the entire 48' for overhead storage ( prob make 2' shelves) Need a little help designing this thing so it doesn't fall down lol. Here is what i'm thinking so far, let me know what you think. Was thinking of using a beam running the full length 2' out from the wall (basically above the edge of the bench, with support posts of course, still gotta look up code book for spacing) and have 2x6 floor joists 12" o.c. (have lots of free 2x6's), the thing i am worried about is the overhanging and unsupported 3' of 2x6 on the open side of the beam, this will only need to hold up 1 or 2 people though.

Regardless of the o/c spacing- the formula for cantilevered floor systems is:
for every foot of cantilever there most be two feet on the other side of the support.
So, with your particular scenario you could only have a 1' cantilever (3' total).

2 feet is too deep.
You will lose things pushed to the back.
Make it no more than 12 inches.
Even 8 inchs unless you are real tall.
