I have a typical 20x20 garage and I am trying to figure out where is the best place to put it. I just bought one of those gladiator 8 ft workbenches. I am continually modifying my 68 camaro so I want to be able to have as much work area and still let the family have a clear path to go in and out of the garage on a normal basis. I typically only have one car in there but want to put two in every once in a while. Would it be best to put it in on one of the sides or at the end opposite of the garage door? Any tips would be appreciated.

Have you thought about getting some heavy duty casters and making a rolling workbench? It would make your work area a lot more flexible, you can roll it right up to your work area and then move it out of the way when not in use.

Depends on how much room you have on either side of your garage doors... do you have a single door or 2 doors?
In my case I have 2 doors so I only have about a foot from the outer edge of each opening to the side walls. If I were to put up a bench down the sides I couldn't pull a car in properly.
My requirements were the same as yours as I work on my Corvette and Panoz often and still need to park the both of them in there. I ended up making the back wall my workbench, toolbox, etc. area.

I would either go with a tool box or mobile work bench or one that could fold up flat against the wall. I have a 20x20 and it is very hard to fit 2 cars in at any time, let alone if I have 2-3 feet of space taken up in front or a side.
My garage is 24x24 and the work bench is on one of the side walls. Like Cobra4B said, you can not pull a vehicle in proper as the bench sticks out beyond the garage door. I am currently planning to move the bench to the back wall, I want to have a solid work bench with some base cabinets underneath on casters so I can pull them out if I need the extra work space, basically doubling the size of the work bench when needed.
I the way I have it planned it my head is the bench will only take up about half the width of the garage, so I will still have room to work on my truck in one bay.

I have a double car garage with one large door. I put the bench and all cabinets down one side wall with shelves and fridge, tool box, compressor, snowblower etc down other side. That leaves me enough room to pull in a full size mini van and have enough room to walk in front of the van easily.

Here's some so-so shots of mine w/ the 2 cars pulled inside. Along the back wall I have my toolbox, workbench, 2 shelving units, a grinder/polisher, and my compressor as well as a thin trashcan. I thought I was moving so I made everything mobil, but now that I think I'm goint to stay put for 3-5 more years I'll probably re-do it all w/ new cabinets built in for a cleaner look w/ more space.
