Portland, yeah, that one.
You can get butcher block tops from a few places in a few different sizes and thicknesses. Lista, Edsal and many other places make them for what I feel is insane amounts of money.

The best deals I found were from Sears and IKEA. The Sears ones are on sale right now so like, $120 for the 8' one here: http://www.sears.com/shc/s/p_10153_12605_00914965000P?prdNo=1&blockNo=1&blockType=G1 and about $100 for the 6' one here: http://www.sears.com/shc/s/p_10153_12605_00914961000P?prdNo=2&blockNo=2&blockType=G2

My last bench I did a new top on I got a kitchen counter top from IKEA for $90 I think and it's just shy of 6'. I gave it 3 coats of gloss polyurethane and it now looks like this:

Whatever benchtop you go with, if you do decide to seal it with poly or something, be sure to do both sides. Otherwise you might get some cupping on top from the bottom absorbing more moisture from the air than the top.

The Edsal 30"x60" butcherblock top is 1-3/4" thick and I'm retailing it at 285 minus the garage journal discount it comes to $257 and ships free of charge.
Check it out.

NewB here...I just bought the Costco Whalen rolling tool bench / overhead cabinet and wanted a workbench table to match.

What do you think of the bench, was just looking at that this past weekend?

Also as noted Whalen also makes a regular bench, but I have not seen in Costco.

I looked at the SEARS 6' top on its website and was about to pull the trigger (it was on-sale for $99 last week). I decided to go to a local Sears to check and see if they have it in stock to save the shipping cost. They didn't have any in the stock room, but they had two units on the clearance floor, marked at $69.99 each (even better right?, not so!!). So I asked the sales staff to ring both of them up for me. He pulled the clearance sku out of the system several times and they rang up $24.99 each :). I ended up with two 6' tops for a little over $50, which I paid off with Land's End gift card some has given me. That was the most inexpensive counter top I've ever purchased. TBW, COO of the tops is Viet-Nam.

That's definitely a deal of "you ****" proportions. :p

Great find!

A local bowling alley was being demolished. My workbench top is part of an alley. It's made an awesome top as it's very thick and sturdy. I'll take a photo and measurements tomorrow and post.

thanks everyone! I got my garage together and realized...no room for a bench and a toolbox on the same wall.
