Workbench question

I need a new workbench and right now I have a bench that is 2ft deep by 8ft long with a lower shelf that is the same size. It seems that the majority of the space is just a catch all for junk that I should either put away or throw away. I only ever use about 4ft of the bench to do any actual work. Any of you guys use a short bench to free up more floor space or space for more shelves/cabinets. I would like to see some small benches and have been looking at the workbench thread but that is a lot of searching to find what Im looking for.

Here is mine. Its 6' long bc like yourself, I found big benches waste space and attract clutter. Id personally rather have more tools/machinery and less clutter. Under the center is a cutout for the "forks" of my pallet jack. I also dont believe in the typical DIY bench btw, I prefer cabinets for storage. These three were $1 each at auction and the 4x4 top is recycled free wood from work. The top is "bolted" together with threaded rod, washers, and nuts.....total cost of the bench was something like $7.

What type of work do you want to do on the smaller bench? How about a tool box with a wood top for a work surface. Pretty handy to keep the tools in the drawers and work on top. The common 27"wide x 18" deep boxes are plentiful and cheap on the used market, they provide a decent working area. Up from that there is always the HF 44", with the same 18" depth but just a hair shy of 4' long. Depends on what you want under the bench. I like drawers for smaller, lighter stuff and shelves for bulky heavy things.

Here is mine.

I'm loving the dumbbell in front of the pink craftsman tool bag. :lol_hitti

Thanks guys....those are both good ideas. I have been accused of being a cheap *** so Im really liking the used cabinet route....minus the pink bag of course.
