workbench support

I built a workbench that spans just over 8ft using 2x4s as the bench top. For support underneath the benchtop, on each end, i screwed in 2x4s horizontally, and in the middle i laid two more 2x4s horizontally. Between the two ends and the middle i laid in 2x4s flat. The boards i laid in flat are sort of an after thought because i wasn't sure if i had enough support. At 8ft is this enough support so my benchtop won't sag? I snapped a few pics so you can see what i mean.

You have less than 4' unsupported? That should work fine for a home workbench.

From very end of the bench where i have a horizontal support to the two middle supports is 3' 9" on both sides. Between both ends to the middle i laid in another 2x4 flat, not horizontal. I doubt laying in the 2x4s flat does much though. Hope that makes sense how I'm describing it.

My Pop had 3/8" threaded rod wit hfender washers and locknuts run between the ends of his bench under the long 2x4s, cranked down REALLY tight. IDK if it made a difference, but that bench was almost 20' long and it had no sag.

The problem, if there is one, is the 8 foot total span.
If you stay away from big block rebuilds, you should be fine.

It would help if you backed up a bit and took a picture of the whole bench. But if I understand your description and photos, that is a pretty stout bench and is supported just fine. You could probably stand on top of it and jump up and down with no flexing.

It is unfinished here. Only thing i added was a lower shelf on the bottom. Keep in mind i am very amateur at all this stuff, but i try.

That should be just fine. The only thing I might suggest would be to add a piece of 1/4" tempered masonite to the top to give you a flat (and replaceable) work surface.

Looks like the bench will probably serve you well. As far as sagging goes, just don't leave a Volkswagen on it for over a week:D.
