I explained to my wife before we married that I wouldn't be wearing a ring because of my job.She accepted it but wasn't happy about it.She never mentioned it but I knew it bothered her so I had a wedding band tattooed on my finger. She's happy with that. She'd prefer the ring but she recognizes the danger involved. The funny part is the guy who did the tattoo put it in the exact right place by guess work that when I put my ring on for special ocaissions it covers the tat perfectly.

Rings scare the hell out of me, seen some bad things happen, and I have never worn my wedding ring more than a total of a few hours, for special occasions and such. In fact, I don't wear any jewelry at all, not even a watch. I don't get what the allure of jewelry is.

Can't believe this thread is still going.....

Have never worn a ring (on my finger!!), but have burned my wrist when I pointed an OA welder at my watch band....also burned my fingers trying to get it off!

Depends on what I'm doing but usually I do wear mine, my ring isn't very tight on the finger though. If I'm doing wiring or something that's not very physical I'll leave it on. If I'm pulling an engine it definitely comes off along with all the other jewelry. My little helper (Jay is 4) gave me a motorcycle chain style bracelet last Christmas (guessing mom helped him with that one) and I take the ring and bracelet off and put the bracelet through the ring. Easy not to lose the ring or a finger that way. Since the bracelet is pretty hefty its easy to remember to remove it and the ring always comes off at the same time.

If you absolutely HAVE to wear a ring, get some rubber O rings of the proper size. They do not conduct, and will tear apart if they get caught.

Wear it on the proper finger and the message is loud and clear.

Darned right I'm your buddy.

I *ALMOST* never wear any jewelry - no watch, ring, or chains. The ONLY exception is that I am an EMT, and wear a cheap watch on a plastic band when I am on duty as an EMT so I can get stats (Pulse, Respirations, etc.). Other than that, never!

BTW, the degloving injury has a name - it's called a 'Wedding Ring Avulsion'. I always figured that any injury that has its own name happens WAY TOO OFTEN to ignore.

I always take mine off. Not for fear of injury from the ring itself, but for fear of injury from my wife if she finds out I damaged and/or destroyed the ring.

Just last week one of our machinist was telling me that the owner of a machine shop that he worked in in the sixties had a bunch of fingers in a bottle of framaldihide in his office. Every time someone lost a finger, it would go into the bottle. I was told that He thought it was a good reminder to his employees to be careful and not to wear jewlery.

One of my best friends is an HVAC guy. I don't think I've ever seen him with a ring on. But he has a tattoo that is two lined running around his finger... basically the outline of his ring. He never has to remember to put it on or take it off, and avoids all the possible issues at work. I believe its the only tattoo he has. It's the only one I have ever considered.

When i married my wife, I wasn't in a position to afford wedding rings. So my mother gave us money for wedding bands or for something that we needed.

My wife bought a wedding band and I had a choice of buying a ring or a Smith and Wesson, 8 3/8" nickel plated 44 mag........

We've been married for 35 years and i still don't have a ring :)

Being recently married I wore my ring every day. Then I started leaving it at home during the week. The wife got a little upset at first. But now she only likes me to wear it when we go out.

Been married 39 years. Ring is off whenever I do any kind of work...cars...yard...wood and... for some reason when I sleep - don't even recall how that started.

I am not allowed to wear any jewelry where I work, so that's a plus. I'll be getting married this weekend, and getting used to a ring is going to be hard, but she knows that at work, and the garage, it won't be worn. She's ok with it.

i wore my ring the first few years of marriage but did have an accident with it on that dug it under my skin.... when i finally got it off it never went back on, and that was over 30 years ago.. now that i'm retired i'm still not going to take a chance on catching it on something...

My dad lost his ring finger when he caught it on an outrigger of a backhoe. He just loaded it onto his trailer and he was jumping off the trailer when the ring caught. He was hanging by the ring that had degloved the finger. We still have the 10K ring that they cut off and he still gets phantom pains in the missing finger.

No way will I wear any jewelry when I am working on something. Its not worth the outcome.

When I was working as a carry out at a grocery store I had problems with the class ring catching in the cart when lifting sacks out. So rings started off on the wrong foot with me anyway. However then I started in a machine shop and they highly recommended that you didn't wear rings or watch bands that could expand to come off if caught. When I was going to get married I told the wife to be that I wouldn't be wearing a wedding ring. At first she thought that I was wanting to hide that I was married until I explained to her that I had grown rather attached to my finger and would like to keep it. So we started out that I would wear it on weekends and vacations. Somehow that fell by the wayside and I haven't worn it in decades now. I hope that it is in her jewelry box. If I was going to cheat the ring wouldn't stop anything anyway.

Where I work before we start an operation (I build bombs) The guy running the job (crew chief) briefs to remove all rings, watches and jewelery. I don't wear any out of habit.

Many years ago my Dad nearly lost his arm when his wedding ring got hung on a moving conveyor belt, doesn't wear it anymore and I don't blame him one bit.

I can't even read some of these posts, because when I was active on the rescue squad, I don't think that a week went by without a call that was the result of a ring. Sometimes the finger(s) was / were badly damaged, and other times the person was lucky, and only needed us to cut the ring off the finger. For that reason, I haven't worn a ring in more than 45 years. I can't tell you were my high school or college rings are at this point, since I stopped wearing them. I wore a wedding ring for one day.. that was the day that I got married..

26 years on military aircraft and no ring was the law. Now I have to remember to take it off.......

Actually worked with a guy who's hand was in the picture of a safety poster in the aircraft hangars for years.........completely missing the ring finger.

I wear my wedding ring to work and that's about it. Don't wear any other jewelry - is a watch considered jewelry? Usually one of the first things I do when I get home is take off my ring. There have been a couple of times when I did have it on, stuck my hand down into an engine bay and the second I felt it graze against something immediately took my hand out and took the ring off.

My wife reminds me to take it off when I head out to work on anything, garage, yard, etc. However she gets a little ticked when I forget to put it back on when we go out, well not ticked but dissappointed.

Well, I spent eleven years on active duty and rings for aircrew, at least while flying, were a big no no. Too many lost fingers, I guess. I'm sure it was the same for the maintainers. Watches on the other hand were o.k. and the bigger the better. :headscrat

Guys and gals please don't wear your rings while working if there's ANY chance at all of catching it on a tool or piece of equipment.

I heard a story from a surveyor about someone who's wedding band saved his fingers. He and another guy were lifting a manhole cover. He had his hand at the edge of the opening when the other guy accidentally dropped the cover on it. He said the wedding band keep the cover from smashing his fingers. That's the only story (if it's true) I've ever heard where a wedding band actually prevented an injury. All of the other ones, and they are numerous, are cases where the wedding band caused an injury.

BTW, I haven't worn a watch since just a few days before I got married. There was an inscription from an old girlfriend on the back of my watch and I just didn't think I should take it into my marriage.

My ex-wife insisted that I always wore mine. Once, I got it caught while climbing down off a truck. I was basically hanging by my ring for a split second. Luckily, I didn't get hurt. Before I married my current wife, I told her I would never wear a ring to work. She agreed, but now it pisses her off. I still won't wear it to work, I just wear it on the weekends.
