Okay, I admit I am a pretty good hand sharpener of knives and scissors, BUT have any of you fellows used or own a good benchtop device for sharpening our favorite pocketknives and handtools? i have seen the Drill Doctors Chisel sharpener "Work Sharp", thats cool, a see-through stone so you can watch the honing process, but i am looking for a more VERSATILE gizmo, and of course i would much rather fabricate or make it myself of course.....frugal you know!

So any ideas or plans or videos you garage dudes recommend would be appreciated big time!

I must add, that if I could put the very same razor edge on an OLFA or STANLEY snap-off knife blade, I wouldn't be tossing them out when they get dull from all-purpose cutting!

I use a 1x42 belt grinder on kitchen ,bench, and working knives. My good custom knifes are only done on stones.A ceramic case moonstick is good for the final edge.Spyderco and lansky make good sharpening devices Id stay away from the electric kitchen sharpeners with your good blades.Hand sharpening wont ruin the temper

The trick is to not wait until the knife is dull, when it starts to lose the edge touch it up.

Also what sort of an edge are you trying for, thin razor sharp, or a tough working edge?

A thin edge tends to roll over, and its easy to straighten it without grinding, just a few licks on a rod type edge thing.

I actually "re-sharpen" my OLFA snap off blades, its just the tip that gets mangled after a while, and I just snap it off for a new one!
