Been a while but like I said earlier, life would get in the way! Still mostly a one man show going into the winter, but had some help from my brother and a telehandler.

Had the first shop project already. Painted my mother-in-laws trailer.

The telehandler sure was nice and easy to use. More to come just slowly!

One quick question and I believe I’ve seen this answered before but would you all do the sheathing before or after the trusses?

After getting the walls up, I decided to have someone else install the trusses and while they were at it the sheathing and roof as well. They did in 1 day what it would have taken me 2 months to accomplish.

Trusses arrived early so I was really anxious to get started. Got the name of an installer and after a deal was made, they were off to work.

Sheathing going on as well

8d4dbdf5efea5a3eaa821df08aca0751.jpg

I’ve read that the building would look smaller from the outside after the sheathing goes up. I can say for sure that is true, but the inside looks huge now too.

Felt, shingles, and ridge vent tomorrow and then they’ll turn it back over to me. Need to recharge the wallet before brick and siding go up. More pics tomorrow of the roof finished.

That's one heck of a shop. How did you make the flat straps work that the concrete guys put in the slab?

Also good to know about Heritage Truss... I may build a shop next year and they're super close to me. Not sure how much of it will be by my hands... wifey isn't interested in having a half finished shop in the backyard for how long it'd take me.

I actually ended up using truss tech in Buford. They came in abou $2500 less than heritage truss.

barn build.jpg

barn build 001.jpg...nice lookin shop,...when I built my barn with 11 foot walls by myself, I bolted down the bottom plate then installed the studs one by one, then cut 2x6 blocks that fit between each stud on the bottom plate,..this way I could put up this building by myself. Only help I had was with concrete and rafters and roof sheeting,...built this 24x35 in one month time..

I'm way behind you! Your board and baton siding is similar to what I'll be doing along with a brick skirt. It's gonna take longer than a month just to get my garage doors delivered [emoji23]

Knocking out a few things over the weekend. Trying to get the place lockable so I can get some tools out there for the brick work and siding without having to haul it back into the house garage.

Found a door at the HD, but had to order it, seems not much in stock for 2 x 6 jambs. Doo came one a pallet standing straight up if you can believe that. Very nice and went in smoothly.

On to the garage doors. I also ordered these fro HD. 2” thick clopay doors. Man these things are solid. Got one up, mostly, today. Getting there.

Oh my goodness this whole thread is awesome !!

Love the lake and the shop with all the retaining walls and brickwork

I also have a soft spot in my world for woodworking but you sir are leaps and bounds ahead of me in terms of quality and workmanship. Just amazing !!

I really like the longer overhang in the front. Looks like part of it is over the inside of the shop ?? It really breaks up a large gable for sure !!

Thanks jblnut, it’s referred to as a Dutch hip roof and it matches the house. Been a long road but doing most of the work myself has been rough. Sometimes fun but sometimes a little frustrating when I bring in contractors. The hardest thing going now is the soffits. The trusses weren’t aligned very well during install so trying to figure out the best way to line them up for a cleaner look.

Doing the work yourself has major advantages though. You can look at it and feel way more accomplished then by hiring 100% of it out. Like you with the roof, I hire out what I can't do myself (or don't have time to do) and do the rest myself.

I'd see if you can borrow the tape measure they used when they put up the trusses. If it measured the trusses wrong maybe it'll be able to replicate that to the soffits as well :lol_hitti

That place looks like paradise. To be on a lake and have a shop to work on stuff. What a wonderful feeling that must be.

Thanks guys, the lake is nice. Been busy on the shop so wife is bugging me for lake time. Got the plywood up and primed. Still putting off those pesky soffits. [emoji12]

Had a break on the 4th so tubing it was

Didn’t realize how much paint it’s gonna take to paint this thing. 5+ 5 gallon buckets just for primer. The siding boards and trim are rough sawn pine and man those knots are a pain to get to stop bleeding through. Picked up a couple of cans of this and it seems to have nipped that for now at least

On another note the electrician should be starting this week. Gave him a layout for electrical and called the power company. They’ll tie right into the main service line and give me a second meter. 200 amp service and will get a 100 amp breaker and disconnect for the big tig welder.

Like the way this is going, nice job. Great location too. Must be nice to have the choice of QST or fishing in that lake. What type of fishing do you do there? Any bass?

Thanks Jay, oh yea a little of everything available to fish for. Mostly spotted bass and striped bass, but some largemouth, crappie, occasional walleye

Looking good!

The day the power company installed the meter and energized the building was one of the best days of the project, finally get to stop tripping on drop cords running everywhere.

Curious as to who your inspector is? Your profile says your in Oakwood, which would put you in the same county I'm building in. I've been working with Josh and so far I don't have any complaints, been pretty easy to work with.

Annette is my inspector. No problems so far. Hall county has been pretty easy to work with. I was in Gwinnett before we moved and that would have been a nightmare from what I’m told.

Enjoyed following along with your journey, and I love the shop! Downsizing on the house and up-sizing on the shop is never a bad decision ;)

Soffits finally done. I’m deathly afraid of heights so built a homemade scaffold with wheels. My wife calls it The Chariot.

I tend to feel more comfortable on it vs an A-frame ladder.

I really thought after all the ladder work involved in this I would have shaken my fear by now but it just won’t go away. Oh well almost there anyhow!

Great job with the brick work. Though I guess you've had a bit of practice by now. The scaffolding was a good call. I recently borrowed some from a contractor buddy and even though it's a bit tedious to move, lots o parts, it's so much better than up and down ladders.

Hey Bob,
Is that siding board and batten? If so, I've never seen it with that wide of a batten before, it's nice looking. Very nice place. :)

Well it been a while, but I never said this thin would be totally done in any real time frame LOL

I last left off just having finished framing out the bathroom and mechanical rooms. Over the winter I decided it was getting too cold to hang out in there for much time so it was time for insulation:

Now I know what all you guys are probably thinking “why didn’t you go with sprayed in foam insulation?”

To sum it up: 1. Cost, 2. I could do it myself, and 3 I don’t live in an extreme climate where it gets below freezing too often. I can handle heat but cold just doesn’t suit me. Plus this stuff was at Home Depot so it was easy to get at the spur of the moment when the propane heater wasn’t much help ;-)

The biggest issue here is that this stuff doesnt come in 12” batts so I had to split each one of them to fit them between my 2X6 on 12” studs. Lot of itchy’s LOL. One man job and I knocked it out in only 3 weeks ;-)

next I had to cover the walls. I thought hard about this and after much deliberation I settled on 7/16 OSB. I wanted something solid that I could cover later if I wanted and again it was a one man job and the materials were readily available.

More updates coming and I’ll leave you all wondering what I covered my ceilings with!

Really awesome build! Especially doing most of it by yourself! Just one question, why no windows? Maybe I missed it, I see they were in the sketch up

You didn’t miss them, they’re not in yet. Since I’m matching the exiting house, its been difficult finding the same windows so I went ahead and built it all in with plans to add windows later. Thanks for the reply. I see a lot of incredible garages on here, but there is a certain satisfaction in doing most of the work yourself.
