Workshop Tunes

Well, I'm getting started on my workshop but progress is slow. The weather is slooooooow to defrost the ground, hence pushing my concrete work.

Anyway, I'm thinking about the tunes I'd like in the shop. Now, I'm all about the cutting edge technology in audio/entertainment. However, I really want the tunes in the shop to be retro. I'm thinking an early 80's receiver/amplifier, definitely want the old silver face w/analog level gauges. Figure I'll get an RCA to 3.5mm adapter so I can run all the new stuff through it (my music, Pandora etc.).

All that said, anyone have any suggestions as to a particular brand/model that has held up well over the years? I have found a bunch online, but I'd rather find one at a yard sale or something...that way I can at least power it up and possibly hear it operate (make sure all channels work and whatnot).

Any thoughts??

If you have a Goodwill in your area check there. Several of the guys at work have picked up old receivers for use in the shop there. I'm fond of the old Yamahas myself.

Can't go wrong with old pioneer! I have been addicted to pioneer since the early 70s. The problem with any of the older units is dust in the volume and balance. You will need to keep it enclosed, possibly in a glass front case.

You do both retro and cutting edge. Get an old stereo receiver, Kenwood, Pioneer , whatever, and hook up a wireless Bluetooth adapter to one of the RCA inputs.

Just a thought, but find something that can be turned on and off by pulling the the plug. That way you can plug it into a switchable outlet. When you walk into the shop, you can flip the radio on with the lights.

Find an old set of Bose 901s and something with 150 watts or more per channel. Hang the Bose from the ceiling, about a foot from the wall and let it rip.

I still have my early 70s 901 series 1 speakers, Marantz 240 power amp and 3300 preamp. The amp has been rebuilt a couple times and the preamp is in need of a tuneup but the system still cranks. Bose has also replaced a few of the drivers over the years, free of charge.

bought a milwaukee 18v radio so i can use it when theres no plug to be used.

stick it on a station and let the background sound do its thing.

Look around for some last gen Sony mini HiFi component systems. You can find them used for around 150, and they are a lot better then the newer compact stereos. I have a Sony mhc-ec98p running at 530watts RMS, with a 10" sub.

In the music industry, there's no replacement for displacement.

I've been doing some looking.....boy are people proud of the vintage stuff if its in good shape. $500-$800 for decent stuff....yikes.

I'll be watching the yard sales for sure...lol

It's not a bargain, and not intended for a huge garage...but I bought a Marshall Stanmore speaker for my garage and the sound is surprisingly good and big for its size. It has modern Bluetooth tech and resembles '60s-'70s vintage Marshall speaker cabs. Looks right at home in vintage-inspired garage.

I have a pioneer receiver that was my dads that is from the early 70s and it is still kicking, it was even stolen in the 80s and recovered, still has the evidence sticker on it. I'm planning on using it in my home garage just need some time to set it up. I have a XM receiver I use at work, my car and home, going to plug it into the pioneer when u get it set up.
