Would you build on this workbench?

It may seem like a strange question, but I have to ask it. Last week we opened up an auction on Bidaroo.com for a Gladiator Workbench that's signed by all the drivers from the 2009 Indy 500, with all the bids benefiting Breast Cancer research. Now, what I was wondering was whether or not, you guys would keep the workbench in a place to display it, or would you actually use it like any other workbench and build on it because it had a special inspirational meaning to the projects you built on it.

So, how would you use this workbench http://www.flickr.com/photos/gladiatorgw/3812818562/?

I would use it for display personally. Thats kind of the point of the signatures and such isnt it?

If I remember the story correctly a good friend of one of my old bosses, had a lawnmower that hed been using for quite a few years that broke down and he brought it into my bosses shop. The guy told him he won it from some kind of raffle at a Garth Brooks concert at a state fair years back. Said it was signed by the opening act, someone he couldnt recall. So my boss fixes it and comes to find it was signed by Kenny Chesney.

I'd use it unless it was signed by all the NHRA drivers :p Really though it would bug me to use it and mess up any of the signatures on it. That's cool what the proceeds went for.

I'd use it, for sure. It's a workbench. Granted, I'd probably use it for less abusive tasks where I'd not risk running my skilsaw into it, covering it it holes, etc. I'd probably use it for my gun maintenance table (to replace the foldup I'm currently using).

Just use it. They are just peoples names. Probably never going to be worth what you paid for it in years to come.

I'd use it like normal and sand it smooth when it got beat up. Indy drivers signing something mean nothing to me.

Indy 500 is a shell of its former self. I like a few of the drivers who remain, but most are mid-talent hacks who aren't worthy of cleaning the helmets of the greats who once raced there. The cachet of such a table is minimal compared to what it would have been 15-20 years or more ago.

Assuming I'd spend money on that, I'd take the top off and use it on a bar or something. Then put a new top on the frame to use as a real workbench.

I wouldn't bid on something like that in the first place, if it was signed by valentino rossi or mario andretti maybe...but even still, I would likely buy a new top to abuse and mount that current top on the wall, or clear coat it with urethane and make it the counter top for a bar or something so it still gets used but not damaged.

:edit: rjspitz beat me to the bar top idea, i'm too slow this morning. need moar coffeeee

Other than hanging the signed top on the wall, I could see putting a piece of glass over it and using it as a desk.

I'd probably give the top to my wife. She likes Indy car stuff. I would see maybe using it as a bar table for the man cave or something but I probably wouldn't use it for the reason that I probably ended up paying a premium price for it only because it had a bunch of names on it I probably don't even know or care about. But it would ba a cool conversation piece for awhile and the money went to something good.
