I'm told it has a slight oil leak and the sight glass is broken. What's a sight glass? I'm not familiar.

The starting bid is $300 right now.

They say it weights about 500 pounds and is on a pallet. I don't suppose that could just be hauled home on a 4x8 expanded metal trailer could it? Or laid down in the back of a ford expedition?

He might be refering to oil level sight glass on the compressor pump. How slight is the oil leak? I don't think I pay much more than his asking price.

300 is max. You need to know where and how bad the oil leak is. It can be hauled on the trailer or laying down. But if you lay it down you wont be able to run it right away as the oil will creep into the cylinder. The sight glass is where you monitor the oil in the compressor head. it is easily replaced.

I would buy it. It uses an American made two-stage compressor and is essentially a rebadged Campbell Hausfield air compressor. Replacing the sight glass will likely repair the oil leak and should not cost more than $20. Those units new are selling for $1000+ at Home Depot, though they are clearancing them currently. If your trailer is rated for 500lbs it will definitely haul on there. Laying it down will work, though you will leak oil everywhere in the back of your Expedition.

It's worth more than $300. It's probably a 7.5 HP model if it's putting out that CFM. New price around $1500. Oil leak can just be seepage from a seal, a bolt or ...maybe the sightglass.

More importantly...ask the owner how often the tank was drained and how old it is. If it's never been drained, move on.

That "SCFM" is a bogus rating... it's probably more like 15@ 90 psi... not all that impressive. I forget exactly how the "honest" ratings are figured but, I believe, they are rated "free air"... the SCFM isn't.

I'd pass on it... but I don't like any of the big box store compressors anyway...

Says the tank is an '05 but there is not telling about how often it has been drained.

The compressor is at a place locally that buys stuff and recycles what they can and sells what they can. I bought a dolly for moving 55gal drums there last week off of ebay for $15. Don't really have any drums to move but figure it could be used to move other stuff easily enough.

What I would question is: Did the sight glass get broken and the oil went low? Did that cause the compressor to over heat? Now there is a slight oil leak, it could be a simple fix like the sight glass or there could be a crack in the pump. If you bought it for $300.00 to $400.00 it would be a good deal even if you had to replace the pump later. IMO

lets see,$100 for the 80 gal tank,$100 for the single phase motor,$50 for the mag starter and $50 for the leaking pump.hell yeah,I'll jump on it.

That is the same compressor I have. Its a true 7.5 hp running, and probably close to the 23 scfm. Its in the same league as several other 7.5 hp compressors. Made by Campbell-Hausfeld, its "industrial" grade, not the bogus hp/cfm of the home models. Mine was made in '03 and has a pump with USA on the end of it. If it doesn't have USA cast into the pump end cover, its the Chinese made clone of the original pump. Either way, they sell for $1750 now, and all comparable 7.5 hp/20+ CFM units bring about the same money or more. You shouldn't have any trouble getting a new sight glass from Home Depot or C-H. Need to investigate the oil leak. They are splash lube and rated for continuous duty if Mobil I oil is used in them.

Newer models have the position of the pump and motor reversed from mine, and have a regulator and gauges on a plate on the top front. They still have an outlet valve on the side however.

Stand it upright on the trailer (bolted on the pallet), run 4 ratchet straps to each corner of the trailer or pickup bed, and crank them real tight. Home Depot has real good ratchet straps for about $14 each, yellow, 2" wide, 27 ft long, 10,000 lb rated.

Sorry Busta, Charles' recommendation is a tough act to follow with a one word answer. Thanks though. I'll keep watching the comp on ebay. My wife doesn't understand why my 33-gallon oilless craftsman compressor isn't good enough for some reason.

I bought mine new. I was using a "4 hp" 20 gal Sears compressor with a aluminum oil filled pump with iron cylinders. It worked great, just not enough compressor to run a TP Tools blast cabinet and now that I had a big shop, I wanted an equally big compressor. I figured out that the 5 hp models, the real 5 hp ones, two stage, 80 gal, would be marginal with the blast cabinet. I looked at expensive ones (7.5hp), such as the Curtis, the Saylor-Beal, Quincy, Champion and others, but it was more money than I could afford. I looked at some of the cheaper 7.5 hp models such as the one made up in the Carolinas that Harbor Freight sells, but decided it was on the too cheap end of the spectrum (though I now really think it is a good unit). I looked at the C-H units, always figuring it was a cheap consumer grade, and finally decided it was somewhere between consumer grade and commercial/industrial grade such as Champion or Quincy. Knowing that Home Depot sold the same unit with different paint on it, I bought it when H-D offered the free year, no interest card deal. I signed up for the card, bought the compressor, put the card in the desk drawer, paid it off about a month before the deadline, called and canceled the card.

I haven't had a minutes trouble from the compressor, and it does move a lot of air.
