I currently have a few of these Stanley portable storage containers and I really like them. Made in Israel of all places. Only place I've been able to find them is Lowes and Home Depot, and they are decently priced. I would like to get some of these smaller ones as well. Haven't been able to find them locally. I was in WalMart today and they had some new line of tools and storage containers "Barbara's Way" - marketed towards women. Apparently it's a partnership with Stanley and they have the smaller containers, but in purple! They are cheaper than anywhere I've seen online. I just don't know if I can bring myself to buy them in purple...

Would you?

Or do you know somewhere to buy them for a decent price?

Don't let the purple scare you off. If it suits your needs and serves the same purpose and does a good job, purple is good.

I assume they are going after the scrap-booking and craft crowd.

If used in your garage or your basement, I see no problem. If used in a shop, they may get a little dirty looking if using for nut/bolt storage or things like taps or other oily tools.

Storage is storage and form follows function with color being the least of my worries.

The two sided black units (similar to the yellow Stanley's) I pick up from Harbor Freight are made in Italy, but are hit or miss if they are in stock.

If you see what you need, grab it, as they are a known container that changes design, supplier and size at the drop of a hat.

I was actually just talking about this today! What a coincidence... I was saying that I have not seen the slim Stanley cases around anymore. I got a few at Lowes a couple years ago and have not seen any since...

How much are the purple ones at walmart?

Funny thing is that I was just looking into this a couple of weeks ago.

As far as I can tell, Stanley bought "ZAG" a couple of years ago, and the stuff they make is now not as good as it once was (sound familiar?). Sears sold several sizes of excellent orangey-red ZAG storage bins prior to Stanley's purchase of the company. I have bicycle parts stored in two sizes of the bins, which were apparently too good to keep making...

Anyway, if you follow the "buy online" Stanley link you posted, it takes you to Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B000Q5NIE4/ref=nosim/13422164-20?s=merchant. That's a Target sales link - and there are other vendors shown on the page.

There are similar items made by Keter (ironically, another similar plastic molding company from Israel) for Sears and other retailers. I think the Keter items are actually superior in fit & finish, but Sears sells only two: a toolbox and a parts holder. The Keter bins fit in the case much better than those in the Stanley item (the Stanley bins are often warped and aren't square, leaving spaces between each bin).

Here's the Craftsman bin:

And here's the Keter version:

Those stanley parts containers are great, I've got several of the deeper ones/ I bought two of the shallow ones for small parts but made the mistake of leaving them in plain view before filling them and they were "confiscated" by the wife for scrapbooking ****. My guess is that is the aim of the purple ones. I wouldn't choose purple, but the containers themselves get an A+ from me.

Yep--scrap-booking and other crafts. Check the arts/crafts section of wal Mart for the smaller ones, and check sporting goods around the fishing stuff for them too. Could be there.

I have a second-hand HF stick welder made in Italy...Didn't know the Italians made so many tools and tool-related stuff.

Are the ones they have at Harbor Freight the same as the Stanleys? They look identical but are branded "Storehouse." They have all three of the same containers on the HF web site.

8 Bin Portable Parts Storage Case Item # 93927

It even has the little square where the Stanley sticker would be, but it's missing :headscrat

Looks like a different type of plastic lid on the HF version unless it's just the lighting.

I was at an auction and they had a pallet load of the stanley version full of stuff. I paid $20 each and bought 55 of them. I figured they were about $17 each for the containers, so why not buy used full of stuff. I like the totes, but ended up taking all the plastic bins out, they fit two wide in one of my cabinets. I sold all the empty totes for $5 each. They are very heavy duty, I can put nails, screws, or nuts and bolts in them, when you carry them vertical, the stuff stays where it is suppose to, so when you put them back down, there is no real mess. When it is really cold, they won't shatter if you drop or hit them hard, but I have broken out a corner and cracked lids. The little containers are pretty tough as well. Lowes has an even heavier duty version now, it is bigger and has aluminum clasps.

Ok so I got really curious about this... Just got back from HF. The Storehouse container is made in China (shocking) and is just a knockoff of the Stanley. Not the same quality. They actually had two different versions on the shelf. Looks like they changed the design a little bit at some point.

I'll be sticking with the Stanley version.

a craftsman i used to know from when i lived on the same kibbutz in israel is supposed to be coming to my area in a few weeks with a small load of tools for me. he was one of my teachers there during a semester aboard but also worked in/ran one of the kibbutz's main businesses, a bus windsheild factory. he is bringing me israeli tools and some other things i miss from my time there, and since he is also american, i will be hooking him up with plenty of old school american goodness, just has to fit in his extra bag.

so maybe i'll have him bring some keter stuff over for me. hey we can set-up a factory pipeline

I've got no issues with the Storehouse versions I bought a year or so ago at HF. Haven't checked the COO, but could be different now as well. I also bought a few of a slightly cheaper compartment box at HF in clear plastic and that has held up well.
