Would you mess with these vise's for free

Vise 1. So I have a co-worker that says he has neighbor that threw out a huge vise behind his garage. It took the 2 of them to carry it. He swears it's much bigger than the Reed No. 4c that I posted a pic of. He has seen them both.

Here's the bad. From what I understand the dynamic jaw is broke off. How they did that on such a huge vise is a mystery.

Here's the good. I have a friend that is a professional welder. He says he can weld the vise no problem. Talked about pre-heating, brazing or tig welding, then post heating. Does it sound like he knows what he's talking about. This welding would be free also.

I believe I would only mess with it if it was U.S. made, and free, or maybe $10. The guy was talking about scrap weight. I would only want this just to have a big *** vise. I don't know. Maybe I would use it if it turned out nice.



Vise 2. All I know about this one is it is a Yost with a missing jaw. He wants to take it off his bench and put on his nice new shiny one from Lowes or some such place.

Again. I think $10.

What do you guy's think. Am I way off base, or close to on the money. Or are they not even worth messing with. I should know more tomorrow.

Go get both! I got a 7 in. jaw record for free, broke and got it welded. Works fine.

Cal: one way to end up with a reasonable Huge vise is to put a couple together because it's getting rarer to find both parts in good shape. i'd pay the $10 and scrap value for the big vise and see what you have. at worse case you have a couple cheap parts vises. best case you might have a vise after you buy some parts for it.

don't kill your friend to get that 4C and just offer him more money because at $250 it's almost a You **** price if it isn't cracked or welded. I've paid that much for a well used Wilton C1 that had all it's parts and it's a lot smaller than a 4C.

The anticipation is killing me.

My co-worker has been working on this for 3 days. But I have an Ace in the hole. The guy that actually owns the big one works at our other store. It's just at his brothers house. Now if I can just catch up with him. I really think he would give it to me for free.

Let's daydream a little. What could the big one be. What's bigger than the 4c. Or is there just too many to list.

Yes I would. I'm always up for a welding challenge. If you have the time to kill, sounds like the price is right.

Get both.
Clean up and weld the big one. It will be a good learning lesson for you and if you screw it up then junk the thing

I would have them already if that deal was offered to me. Worst case you can sell the good parts off of them and scrap the broken pieces.

Well the owner of the big vise says he's going to keep it. And try to fix it. He's not a welder that I know of.

I still can't get through to the guy with the Yost. Hopefully tomorrow.
