But the whole bought vs. built commentary here is amusing. I think people are missing something. People who have that kind of money to spend on the garages and the multi-million dollars worth of depreciating assets (cars) can afford to have a mechanic work on them. So there's no need to build a garage where you can work on cars. So the garages and morph into more of a show room to show off such fancy machinery.

And i suspect that what ever people do to earn that kind of money, it makes FAR more sense to pay a mechanic the ~$100-ish per hour it takes him to work on these machines vs. the owners doing the work themselves. Most people in this world are probably on salary or something like that, but if you were to figure what they get paid on a "per hour" basis it's probably several hundred dollars per hour.

For instance, say some guy makes $3m per year. On a standard 2000 hr work year that's $1500/hr. If he's making a "measly" $1million / yr that's $500 / hr.


Heck, as much as I love working on stuff, if I could wave a magic wad of cash and have my cars magically take care of themselves I'd do that a whole lot more often. Then I could use the spare time to do other stuff.

Not to speak out of turn being new here, but I have ogled most of the garage threads here.

All of those showrooms cannot hold a candle to the garages here.

No real work being done, except for the waxing. Most of you here work on your own stuff. I doubt any of the owners of the garages in that thread ever get dirty, or wonder if they will be able to find the bolts they bagged last night during dis assembly.

All the real working shops here do way more for me.

That link seems to get posted here every few months, and every time it seems to turn into a big discussion about how the owners probably don't work on their cars and therefore they aren't worthy for some reason. I don't understand that line of thought...even if they don't work on their cars in those garages, they're obviously auto enthusiasts. Maybe they're too busy working at whatever job it is they have that makes it possible to own those places. If they can afford it, more power to them.

whats it matter if they don't work on them? is everything you want and own in life something you built and maintained on your own? not everyone has the want, knowledge or desire to build something from scratch but that don't mean that they can't own one. theres no reason to look down on them for being in a position to be able to purchase the item they want.

what is wrong with owning things? if i made the cash i would own a zonda and an F40. i would pay someone who knows to do the upkeep.

for others it's just appreciating the design

i do the maintenance on my stuff now cause it's cheaper that way. i built my truck cause i enjoy it. i race my car cause it's fun.

Could be the guy's first car that he's keeping for sentimental reasons, too.

I have a friend that has a Neon ACR that the used for competition racing. It's an insane little car and he plans to keep it for ever. I think he bought it in the late 90's or early 2000's, when ever Chrysler was making them out of the first gen Neons.

My boss still has his first car, a '43 Jeep. He keeps it as an run about mobile at his island cabin.

Personally, I'd like the best of both worlds. I want an ultra clean garage, with lots of clean cabinets (modulines would be nice but definitely outside the budget), lots of style, ALSO while having space for all of my tools inside cabinets, behind curtains, off to the side etc, to make it appear totally clean, good for other things like parties, graduations, hangin out, etc. Granted most of these appear to have a total lack of tools, they've probably got other shops where thie hired help does the work.
I do however think it is toootaly possible to have a nice, stylish garage that is well outfitted, that work can be done in. Granted it will certainly take more cleaning to keep it that way!

I think even if I was a millionaire, I'd still want to do my own work. But who knows, once you have that kind of money, your perspective on a lot of things changes I'm sure.

In any event, my favorite is the Plymouth/Dodge garage with the exposed beams. It's an oldie, but a goodie. Lots of neon and exposed wood.
