I spied a cap for my Sonoma at the local U-Pull yard. As I was on my motorcycle I couldn't take it with me. Went back the next weekend with the truck and surprise it was all you can carry for $60 day. So I got underneath it and carried it out on my back. It's in great shape except for slightly week gas struts.http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/images/smilies/rocker.gif

I wonder if my local wrecking yards offer deals like this. I would gladly go through the vehicles and fill up 5 gal buckets with relays, fuse panels, switches, and specialty bolts. There are a lot of useful parts on cars that can be used in projects.

Unfortunately the lots in my area want to know what you are looking for specifically, point you to that car alone, and get upset if you wander at all. I want to just browse and window shop in the yard instead.

The thing that I hate is, the car or truck in the wrecking yard is in nicer shape than the one you need parts for.

Most yards have deals throughout the year. LKQ has 50% off every holiday weekend. Some of the others have push/pull/drag, if you can get it over the line it's yours for $50.

If drag was an option, OP probably could have flipped it over and filled with parts. I have seen guys do this occasionally.

Yep, thats how we did them. Flip an old hood over, load everything on top and drag it over the line. 4 grown men have no problem pulling a motor and a few transmissions plus a bunch of smaller items that way.

Isn't it "all you can carry" and not all you can drag? I will bring a come-a-long, attach it to my truck's bumper and drag an entire car across the line. :lol_hitti

Drag it to the line and 4 guys pick up the hood and carry it across. I've heard of that being done.

I think the OP did alright carring the cap out for 60 bucks.

I wish. The few times I went we could carry everything to the line, pile it on the hood and drag it through, one time we had to lift it over the line. Still a deal at $50x4 guys if you get everything you want.

Junkyards started getting expensive in the last few years, set of wheels with crappy tires is about $200 now. If you don't want the tires they will remove them for $5 each.

No "all you can carry" or "all you can drag" deals here, but the local U-Pull-It has manual tire changing equipment that you can remove or install tires on your own. Once in a while they have a 10% off sale is about the best I can get.
