I was looking on ebay for 1/2" conduit knockout.

My own limited experience is with Greenlee products. Particularly the Greenlee manual ratcheting wrench set.

Anyway. So there I was scrolling through ebay listings and I noticed that older Greenlee 3/8" draw studs have square tops. I am used to hex 1" tops where I can use 1" socket to tighten the die when I am cutting a hole.

So. What did people use on those square tops? What kind of socket? What kind of wrench?

Knowing that is a conduit sized knock-out most were probably turned with a crescent wrench. If you must have a ratchet then a proper 4 or 8 point socket is required. If you want to be neanderthal then you can use a 12 point socket.

The rounding of the square drive is due to either an adjustable wrench or a 12 point wrench/socket.

A 4/8 point socket doesn't cost much and is the proper tool to use.......

Yes, I think I will get 4 or 8 point if I buy one with square drive. Thanks again Bob. I did not even think about square sockets/wrenches even though they use them for pipe plugs and gas shut off.

Refrigeration wrenchs are ratcheting wrenchs with female square heads.
This is what I use on the old style knock outs.

Try and put a 1/2" 12 point socket on a 1/2" square nut. It doesn't fit.

Williams is a good source for 8 point sockets.

Yeah you have to go with a larger size. When i disassembled an old Prentiss vise I used to have, there was a large square headed bolt holding the swivel base to the vise body. I don't remember what size square, but a 1-11/16" 12 pt socket fit perfectly and worked well, as it wasn't very tight. Plus I always enjoy busting out my 3/4 drive tools.
