I recently bought a GearWrench 44 Pc. Long Pattern Combination Non-Ratcheting Wrench Set SAE/METRIC (Not sure if GW is a bad word here, but I got a killer deal on the set) but now I need to find holders to organize them in my box. There are 19 SAE and 25 Metric wrenches in the set. Biggest SAE is 1-1/2" and the biggest metric is 32mm. Looking for some suggestions...

I've been using these trays. They hold SAE and Metric up to 3/4" and 19mm. My larger wrenches are in another drawer with my hammers/beaters.

The ernst holders look like the ticket. Now, where is the best place to get them? tried searching for the wire holders, but did not see any threads. Still trying to figure out how best to search the forum though :( I have made wire loop type holders before for traveling, but you always need the last wrench in the line and have to pull them all off to get to it.

I use Ernst. They look the best for sure. They move a bit if you close the drawer hard.

I got mine off eBay. About the same price to order direct from Ernst, their shipping is high.

I just found a thread on the wire holders. Not a bad deal. Might do that until I can get the ernst style holders. Like the idea of being able to see the sizes easier. But free is hard to beat on price!

Picture borrowed from the other thread...

What's your impression of the wrenches? Where'd you get them and what did you pay for them.

You'll pay a dear price for sets that big of full polish wrenches in most decent brands, and it seems most hear regard GW as decent if not good.

I bought the set thru a relative whose company sells gear wrench. Her cost was $150 for the full set. I had planned to buy craftsman pro polished wrenches, and she talked me out of it. Said for the price the gear wrench long wrenches were just as good if not better and more complete. Both made over seas. I have not had a chance to try them out yet, but so far I am impressed with the look and feel.

here is my wrench drawer. the racks in the front of the drawer are 15 spaces so basically they cover 1/4" to 1-1/16" comfortably and the black rack holds 6mm to 20mm great.

you will run into problems supporting the larger wrenches like a 1-1/4" because you will need a deeper drawer.
for large wrenches i suggest just laying them down because they will probably not be used often. the wrenches in the left upper corner go up to 1-5/16"

Well, Summit is definately fast at shipping! Ordered my Ernst wrench holders yesterday, and got the UPS notice that they will be delivered tomorrow. We'll see how it goes! Hopefully I have some drawers deep enough to support the bigger wrenches. I picked up a US General top and bottom chest at HF a few weeks back when it was on sale for $299. Maybe should've opted to spend the extra $$ on the bigger chest! lol

DOH! Ordered 2 sets of the 40 wrench holders from summit, and they arrived today. One set is perfect. The other set has 2 of the same rails in it, and will not work. Had it been the right rails to go big at the back to small in the front, I would've made it work...but alas it is not. Emailing summit to see about getting a new set.

I got a couple of these racks from Sears. Cut to fit, they are about 26" long out of the box. Foam strips insert into plastic strips with adhesive bottoms. I trimmed the opening where the wrenches are inserted, made it easier to remove them.

Those look nice too. Will have to check them out. The Ernst seem to work out pretty good for now though. Can fit a lot of wrenches in a drawer using them! I must hand it to summit too. They are sending me a replacement set of rails at no charge. Told me to keep the bad ones. I am sure I will find a use for them at some point! Here is a shot with the metric wrenches on the good rails

If you can get any more at/near that price PM me, I'd certainly be interested.

I have tried the homemade wire coil racks, the Sort-a-tool trays, the Craftsman foam drawer dividers, and the Ernst racks.

I love the Sort-a-tool trays which hold 28 wrenches, but only has labels for 24. I always end up modifying the trays. I have 3 of them and they are all full with 28 wrenches. For the larger wrenches, I have to cut the back wall out and some of the floor to get them to fit in the tray and in my drawers. But I am not sure how they will work for the longer wrenches. I would imagine that you could cut the sides and ends off the tray and just use the bottom to hold the wrenches in a smaller space. They really are the most space efficient way I have found.

The wire coils seemed to flimsy to me, but could imagine adding a a tray to the bottom and soddering the wire to it would strengthen it up some.

For my wrenches that don't work in the Sort-a-tool trays, I have converted to the Ernst rails. I was able to organize the complete 43 pc Craftsman raised panel 12 pt combo wrenches in a single 22 1/2"x16"x 2 3/4" drawer using both the Sort-a-tool tray and the Ernst Space Saver wrench rails and I am still able to tell at a glance if anything is missing.

What I like about the rails is that I can change the angle they are laid out in the drawers to increase or decrease the space between the wrenches. I have now bought 3 sets of the rails. The first set I bought had the magnet bottoms. I didn't think the magnets made enough difference to justify the almost $10 increase in price. The next 2 sets I ordered without the tape or magnets. I like the magnets betters even with the drawer liners. I bought a roll of 3/4" wide magnetic tape and added to them. It was still cheaper than buying them with the magnets.

The foam dividers spaced everything too far about for my liking. And the they hold the wrenches too tight. Yes I could adjust the angles, and open up the cut outs, but that is a lot of work and they are not as stable as the Ernst rails.

I haven't tried the assorted wrench racks, but I never liked the inability to adjust them and they always seemed too bulky for my needs.

Here is a GW 14mm and a craftsman raised panel 14mm for size comparison. I have the sort-a-tool tray for my craftsmans, but these were too long.

I would cut up the tray something like this so the length of the wrenches isn't a factor. I left the sizing bar and the sides for more stability, but you can trim them off as well to save some more space. This is just something I did real quick in Microsoft Paint, but it should work for your needs. I have also found that cutting out the space for the labels can be cut out to allow the wrenches to sit a little lower so they can fit in a smaller drawer.
