Looking for a good wrench roll. I'll need at least 16 pockets and something that will last abuse (heavy abuse) at a fair price. Please let me know what you all are using and what you like and dislike about the roll.

I've actually considered going into business making them out of leather. You can find people to make them here and there, but nobody really specializes in it from what I've found, and those that make them as a "production" item charge crazy prices.

IMO there's a HUGE demand for stuff like a nice roll for precision tools, picks, punches, etc. Something that will withstand professional use, and look good doing it.

Bucket Boss sells several different styles of tool rolls, I have a couple and have been happy with them. You can buy them on Amazon, among other places.

The only issue with bucket boss and the other one i was looking at is they don't have enough pockets to have a complete wrench set in it and every wrench visible. I have a set of wrenchs from 6-24 not missing a size and want to have a roll for the salvage yards. Same goes for 1/4-1 1/4.

Some fella was making them out of denim on here and selling them. Leather store could make a nice one.

It was my understanding that you should never make tool rolls out of leather because they absorb moisture leading to rusty tools.

I think what is recommended is a canvas tool roll or one made out of a similar kind of synthetic material.

Cheers,
Mark.

There's a huge demand, but customers really don't want to pay much, especially for custom rolls for specific wrench sets. Another is rolls get really big when you get above ten wrenches or so. Combo wrenches work better than OE wrenches.

There are tons of generic rolls out there that will work just fine.

I've done a few as leather is my work.

My truck roll - pretty plain jane

Yes, the same reason you don't store handguns in holsters. But tool finishes are a lot tougher than firearm finishes. This is something I inquired about with other respected makers in the business. Consensus was tools would be fine. As with any tool, wipe them down before sticking them back in so you don't get grime and junk in the pouches.

Military surplus rolls are great. Look for higher M numbers for larger sizes. To be fair, canvas tool rolls will puncture, they don't shuck off dirt and grime like leather, and they sure as heck don't look as good as custom jobbies like GirlinAGarage's!

I personally would stay away from leather pouches. I imagine if they never get wet they would be fine. However I keep my metric Snap On wrenched in one and it got wet (working in the rain). A few days later I opened it up and all the wrenches had a lot of surface rust on them. I've never had that issue with canvas.

Has anyone used this cordura tool roll from Epstein?

http://store.harryepstein.com/cp/ToolRoll/C14TR.html

While looking to purchase some wrench rolls I found this thread and ordered two from Epsteins. The price seems good. We'll see how they are.

Anybody else do any better? I've never used wrench rolls before but I need a solution for my wrenches in the truck tool kit. Grocery bags of wrenches aren't cuttin' it lol.

I have several of the 12 pocket wrench rolls from craftsman. I doubled up some of the smaller wrenches to get the sets to fit ( one for metric , one for sae ) I like the Velcro closure strap. these are in the tool kit in my truck and so far have held up well. I paid 10.00 each.

In the early 1970's I bought a Proto wrench roll like the one below to organize my variety of wrenches because I was a mobile mechanic working out of the trunk of my car and could not have a large tool box. It lasted almost ten years before the clear plastic pockets failed. A friend sewed up a similar roll using heavy vinyl-coated fabric, which is pretty much bulletproof. I put grommets in the upper edge and hang it up on a tool cart now.

The pockets of the newer roll are large enough to get two (or more) wrenches in each one. I am able to sort by size and also keep three pockets full of double box wrenches, up to 5/8" size.

One great thing about wrench rolls is that you can tell at a glance if one is missing!
