Wrench tool surface finish defects

Just bought this 27mm 12 point combination wrench to replace one that was damaged. Concerned about interior finish at box end - see image below. Two large surface finish blemishes - one on each side of box 12 point interior.

I seem to be seeing more of this type of large finish defect on the wrenches and sockets I buy. Do you know why? Would you send it back?

I'd say they is a general lack of quality control. I recently had to request a replacement Huot box for one that was dented only to have the replacement show up scratched. As to sending it back. That is up to you.

That's a common occurrence on many brands of combo wrenches. It is caused by the hooks the wrench hangs from when the wrench is dipped during the various stages of the chroming process. I wouldn't worry about it, and any replacement will often be the same way.

That makes sense. When I was young I had to chrome parts quite often. We would move the hooks half way through to prevent this. I find more of this in tools I buy in the last 10 years, but not on all tools.

Isn't there an issue with the rust resistance over time if the hooks prevent the plating from taking?

By the way, this is from one of the better well known USA made brands.

Once you use it and get the wrench dirty, you won't even notice it.

While it ***** insofar that 27mm is a big, expensive size, this is arguably normal finish variance. That's not gonna harm the fitment or the life of the wrench. Also, a % of the bolt face/diameter that is nothing.

edit-If it turns into something down the road I would warranty it--like if your tools starts to rust heavily in that spot. Because that **** is FOD risk at some stage. But as long as it's matte chrome vs shiny chrom its NBD. There is usually underlayers of protection in any event, like a nickel layer. So you are unilkely seeing bare steel.

Remember its not uncommon for surface friction inside the ring to marr the chrome's polish etc. This is pretty common with all brands, even with decent finishings/ chrom.

Some running maintenance is always a good idea to keep any debris/corrosion seeding (****) away from the areas where the business is wearing on the chrom in the normal course. LIke hit them with wd40/brake cleaner+a rag.

Dirt tends to hold water/humidity, so dirty tools will sooner or later create more corrosive issues.

They put a plastic insert in the box end for the hook to attach for hanging the wrench for chrome plating. That insert prevented the chrome from depositing where it was at.
