So I have snap on wrenches 3/8-13/16 missing 1/2 and 3/4 with some owners markings one rusted pretty good. Then there's this really nice mac ratchet at a pawn shop for $75. Looks almost new with no owners markings. Its 1/2" drive and about 15" long, maybe 16. First, is the ratchet worth that much? 2, would it be an ok trade if i could get the shop to swap? Who would be making out better, or about even?

Pawn shops aren't in the business of swaps. They buy tools cheap, and sell them for a premium price. That's how they make money.

You can see that's true by the $75 price on a ratchet that would likely go for half that on FleaBay. You can be certain that the shop checks the average and highest closing price on FleaBay before setting their price significantly higher.

Tools that are rusty are worth less, as are tools with owners names. Sets missing the most popular sizes are worth less. Combine the three and you aren't looking at much exchange value from a pawn shop -- they'll likely offer $1 or less per wrench. Even if they have a guy that will warranty exchange them for new, they'll want to make that money.

Nice ratchets are absolutely worth it. But if you're looking at that much cash, might want to get one you can get warranty on though.

Do you have other wrenches? A set of Snap-On wrenches would be more valuable than a ratchet (even considering the skips). I urge you to consider the following:

A: The Pawn Shop will certainly take less for the ratchet
B: You can most likely find the ratchet cheaper elsewhere
C: You can get a great quality ratchet for less elsewhere

Ya, I have craftsman USA sae and metric I always grab for. I'm just a dying though. But I do really like mac ratchets. Really don't have many options else where around here, even if I did, I don't have the extra cash right now to put out. Trading is there most viable option for me.

Would trading my wrenches for that ratchet be a good trade? Thought that was pretty clear...

Short answer: no. If they trade, the trade will definitely work out in their favor. A pawn shop is a business, they're not in it to trade fairly.

Were I you I'd follow the conductor's advice. You'll get a fair price for your wrenches, find a great ratchet at a good price, and pocket a few bucks. You win on all counts. One thing, if those are your only SAE wrenches, I'd keep them. If you need a ratchet but don't have the money, I'd go buy a cheap one. A very capable ratchet can be had for 20 or less.

Yes, I have craftsman USA sae and metric sets. I also have capable ratchets. Stanley, craftsman, duralast, blue point and Mac. This Mac specifically has my interest though. Lol

No, this is a bad deal. You can get more for your Snap On's elsewhere, and pay less for the Mac. Trading or not, it's not in your best interest to proceed with this financial transaction.

So what do people think is a good price with the owner mark, grind marks, skip and what not? I don't wanna over charge but don't wanna give them set either lol

I'd have to see good pictures that detail the owner's marks and any other flaws...if they could clean up, and the owner's marks could be removed w/out destroying them you could see up to $8 to $12 per wrench...maybe more, if you're lucky and the buyer is an idiot.

Even w/ the condition optimized, you have to put the time into them... If not, any buyer w/ any sense wouldn't pay more than $5/ea...if that...

If you're still thinking of trying to trade w/ the pawn shop, IF they entertain a trade, expect the pawn value - maybe $10/set, as is....

I'm sure this isn't what you want to hear, but you wouldn't have asked if you wanted to hear BS...right...?
