Re: Wrenchs

Thanks, there is a snap on truck that comes to the shop, guess im a shadetree professional, in my eyes anyway. I have mostly craftsman, but was leaning to a more stable usa made company.

Re: Wrenchs

Snap on is nice but will set you back a nice chunck of change. I would look for light used sometimes can be found for a 1/4 of retail if you know what your are looking for.

Re: Wrenchs

I love my new Armstrongs, not that I've put a bunch of use to them yet, but they've got a nice feel.

Otherwise, most of my stuff is older US made Kobalt, or some of the newer Taiwan made Kobalt from lowes.

None of the HD china husky ****.

have you looked at CM pro ?

they have a similar "feel" to SO, but slightly thinner cross section.
constant use shows some wear in the chrome, but no chipping.

local sears has open stock of USA cm pro, i've never looked at the sets.

been finding single wrenches popping up at flea mkts, swap meets and pawn shops
armstrong & proto are also aroud.

no experience with new SK, but they are USA make

Re: Wrenchs

Without considering one's occupation and use of the tools, many on here will say:
#1 - Snap-on
#2 - Matco/Cornwell
#3 - SK/Wright/Armstrong

But if you dont need to spend a few hundred on one wrench set then don't. Group #3 have some fantastic wrenches that are still made in U.S. If you can find snap-on used for the same price as group #3 new then grab it. But its really about what you find justifiable as a cost.

Re: Wrenchs

Snap-On wrenches are quite nice.....but.....BIG bucks!

While I think the newer Cman ratchets are garbage, IMO, there is nothing wrong with Cman wrenches.

Re: Wrenchs

Snap on are the best
Mac second
Matco, Wright, Sk

All my opinion.
If money is no object, Snap on is the run away favorite from a functional standpoint as well as pride of ownership

Re: Wrenchs

Used Snap On are the way to go if you find the right deal. SK makes a great wrench but be advised they are a bit shorter than most standard length wrenches. I'd get the long pattern version if going with SK.

Re: Wrenchs

The Williams super-combo's are very hard to beat for a good wrench, run a search here and you'll find more info on them. The main difference is a thicker beam (more comfortable) and the "flank drive plus" style open end.

I have several different brands, S-O, Williams, S-K, Matco/Armstrong/C-man pro (all the same more or less), Craftsman raised panel, and some others. They all do pretty much the same thing. None are really bad per say. Boils down to user preference. I myself prefer the Williams, Matco and S-K.

With any set you get, make sure to get the long patten style.

Re: Wrenchs

USA-made Craftsman Pros get my vote, but it's hard to go wrong with used Snap-on. Wright makes excellent wrenches as well. I purchased some Taiwan-made Kobalt full-polished wrenches when they were 50% off and they warrant a look, good length and they feel good in the hand.

Re: Wrenchs

If I was buying new wrenches, wright grip. They asl well made as SO, nice fit in the hand and lower price. When it is all said and done, any well know USA made wrench is good. One complaint you will see time to time are SO have a thin beam and can be hard on the hand, but I havn't notice it. I own SO, mac, cornwell, wright, SK, John Deere USA and RP craftsman. I keep RP around for modifing, but otherwise do not overly care for them. The other brands have worked well and wouldn't have a problem buying any again.

Re: Wrenchs

Of the three tool compnies you have listed I would choose Snap On first SK second. I would not buy MAC.

Armstrong, all USA made. Same quality as matco but will save you some money. They provide allot of tools to the military.

Re: Wrenchs

Wow, thanks for all the replies. I do like Cman Pro wrenchs, just afraid they will end being across the water made when it comes time to exchange, that is if I have to exchange. Might work on a set of Cman pro for the 6pt wrenches. Williams is made by SO arent they?

Reality check. What are you doing with your wrenches that you'll need to exchange them?

Thought of that after post, never had to exchange one before, so that prolly wont be an issue. On a side note, I do have a 15/16 that is bent that I acquired looks like someone doubled up on it wonder if I could get it replaced?

lol thats awesome man

i have sk long patterns; they are a really nice wrench, good fit and finish and stand up to punishment(getting a ford drive shaft out i was kicking the 12mm to free it)
i have wright grips; they are terrific(my favorites), comfy rounded beam and strong as a bull
i have a set of matcos; they have a mirror finish and are very nice to use, they feel professional and are excellent
i have a few snapons, they are very slim. The head is actually thinner than several other brands, which is great for limited access
i have several full polish northern wrenchs; the best bang for your buck....since they are dirt cheap; i got a 1.25" for 8 or 9$
i have HF RP wrenches; they wear out really fast and are very short....they are custom use tools now:lol_hitti
i have some cman pro; they are nice. not much different to the matco, except not as shiny
i have some husky stubbys, they get the job done

i dont own any mac or cornwell so i have no opinion on those; but if i was gonna do it again......id go wright, they are tough :rocker:

Craftsman raised panel use them all day damn near every day. Sure they're ugly I guess but they work all the ones I have say usa on them. I also have some snap on wrenches and they are flat out awesome. Im pretty young so im gradually adding some snap on stuff a lil at a time. Im also starting to buy cornwell they seem nice haven't had them to long so we shall see.

I'm not a professional just a weekend warrior and not really brand loyal..I have a little of everything. As far as wrenches go my favorite sets are the long SK superchromes and my old Williams made Kobalt.

They do get lost from time to time...other than that i have not had to warrent one and honestly if you did loose one...you could always buy a used one on line to replace it...just a though.
