I don't know the answer to that.

However, I can tell you that the sizes on current production USA made Williams 1/4" metric is so tiny that I have to use a magnifying glass. I am thinking about going to some kind of color code using paint pens.

I can't speak to the stamping on the 1/4" drive Wright sockets, but, I recently got a set of 1/2" drive Wright sockets and their stamping is great ... fine for my old eyes!

Yes, my 3/8" & 1/2 Wright items are no problem at all, just the 1/4" drive metric items. In comparison, my 40 year, Wright 1/4" drive SAE sockets are clear and well stamped.

You didn't, by any chance, end up with Wright Cougar sockets did you? I have some of the 3/8" drive Cougar series (or maybe they are the older Wright Allied series) sockets that have fairly light stamping and can sometimes be difficult to read.

I am pretty sure they aren't matco's supplier. Don't have a pic handy, but on the 1/4" metric sockets over 10mm, the outside diameter of the socket steps up from the drive end to the fastener end.

Can you not see the photo I posted? The sockets are not stepped at all, well the 7mm and below are.
The only thing Matco manufactures is tool boxes. Everything else is re-branded stuff.

Re: Wright 1/4" drive, metric sockets, stamped sizes

Sorry fox, I meant that the Matco sockets have a step in them (at least the ones I use). I did see your pic of the 1/4" sockets, and they don't have the step, which is why I figured that Wright isn't the oem for the Matco branded sockets. Sorry for the confusion.

I actually really like the way the matcos are stepped. Whenever I am trying to grab the 10mm, I feel for the step on the bottom of the 11mm and I know the 10 is right next to it. I never read the sizes on them anymore, don't really need to. These are the ones I was talking about.

My Matco 1/4", 3/8" and 1/2" are over 20 years old, and are stepped. Wright used to be stepped also. They may be keeping the old style for Matco.

Thanks Cope, it looks like you are right. I didn't know that Wright used to make the stepped style sockets. I figured the matco was probably made by armstrong, but the armstrong sockets don't appear to be stepped either.

My 1/4" sets are in my road box, and I tend to forget about them. My 3/8" and 1/2" Matco are all metric, and I never thought about who made them until I picked up one of my vintage 3/4" drive Wright sockets. No doubt in my mind they are Wright, and the newer Matco someone posted look pretty much the same.
