Both are quality tools. It seems Proto has been easier to get dirt cheap on Amazon lately. I have not noticed the same with Wright. I have only seen Proto carried locally.(Grainger and a local welding supply) So at least where I am from, I would not know where to get warranty service on a Wright tool. That is enough to tip the scales to Proto for me.

I have mostly Proto, and really appreciate their customer service. They've replaced numerous items for me with no hassle.

As a side benefit, I enjoy Proto's long and storied history back to Alphonse Plomb in 1907. It was basically the pre-Proto Plomb that helped win WWII...the tools that fought big-government socialist fascists -- the tools of freedom! So they get points for that.

That said, I'd be proud to have Wright as my main tools, too.

[EDIT: Are vintage Wright tools collectible??]

Anyone ever seen a Wright Catalog? Love to have one, interested in either a PROTO or Wright 1/2" drive metric impact set.

Think they are both around $200.00, depending on how big a set you want.

[Removed, the history previously posted referred to a tool vendor named Wright Tool Company, not the Wright tool company itself.]

Last year when WrightTool1 became a member here I requested catalogs for my maintenance shops. Overall throughout the company I work for I manage over 20 maintenance shops along with my other duties. I requested catalogs and received a box of them, sent them to the maintenance managers to let the guys go thru them. I know they guys have bought a lot of Wright tools, I personally bought over $2,000 worth myself for home.

We ran into a lot of grief trying to get Proto warrantied thru a few of the dealers, we kept getting the run around about "Send it directly to Proto - verbage from the dealer" and "Take it the dealer whom it bought it from for warranty" - verbage from Proto's customer service". Let me tell you when you are paying people good money and they are getting stuck in the middle and not going anywhere you quickly want to deal with a company who it no BS about handling customer service issues.

Wright tool was founded in 1927...

Looks like the history I found was of a vendor named Wright Tool Company.

Could you please edit your quote of me, to remove the error? I edited my post.

Thanks.

Thanks.

No biggie... It was definitely a strange coincidence.

Yeah oldtools, prove yourself LOL

The wright ratchets are nice but when you put some nice grease in those proto ratchets they are real smooth. Both brands I have gotten defects in the sockets. I cant say I noticed any difference in the chrome??? I know wright tools have poor resale, goes for cheap on ebay if youre looking on there.

This is based on visual quality. I went to a tool store several years ago and it has tons of Wright tools on display. I was not very impressed with visual quality of them. In fact I was disappointed. Because of that, I buy very little of Wright tools. I have quite a bit of Proto tools.

In term of metal quality and heat treatment, I think they are about the same. I would give Proto an edge. Since Proto is part of a large conglomolet, there are more money for R&D, analysis, testing, and inspection.

any help?

All you have to do is go to Wright's website and put in your zipcode and it will give you all Retailers within your Area. There are Numerous Online retailers if you utilize google, but some are TRToolsupply, Harry Epsteins, Toolup, Royal supply etc..etc...

Really? How so? Can you give examples of tools that you actually own?

I'm not Oldtools.
But here's some of mine

Stanley for the most part has left Proto alone from the asian import deal.

Not entirely true. They killed off Proto Blackhawk, at least so far as an once proud American brand is concerned. I've read people say that it might be in reversal but i'll believe that when a lot more time has passed. Some of Proto's ratchets have started coming with stickers saying "assembled with global components" on them around the time that MAC really started to spiral down the drain. And there are of course the spline drive tools which are Taiwan.

When you get right down to it though what are we talking about here. Basic hand tools? This is essentially what both companies focus on and its not very often you trash a socket, extension, combo wrench, crowsfoot etc.. Either brand would be fine. I'd let the dollar decide. One real advantage Proto has at the moment is a superior catalog. Wright's is targeted more toward SAE which does nobody in this day and age any favors unless you're working on large machinery/equipment. Until they expand their metric line [more 6pt sizes and a flank drive/wright drive on metric sockets/wrenches] i'd count that as a real disadvantage.

Wright has better chrome.

Have to disagree there good sir. You have not seen Proto Professional sockets. Both are industrial brands though so i'd not think they would be the ideal brands for someone worried about cosmetic flash and they'd probably be better off shopping other brands [e.g. Snap-On and their super bling and Candy Box like containers].

Wright tools are 100% made in the USA with USA steal.

That marketing sure does wonders. Pretty much all truck/industrial tool companies use USA steel to make their hard line...except for a few very limited examples, mainly ratchets.

Even the pouch that the wrenches came in is made in USA.
