Swung by a church rummage sale on my way to the shoe repair shop. Found this 1/2" drive Wright open gear ratchet buried on a table covered with Tupperware. Pristine shape, clean mechanism.
Either the price was missing a 0....or the lady of the house was getting rid of it!:lol_hitti

But it's mine now.

Wait a minute... you were on your way to the shoe repair shop? You own a time machine or something? Lol. Haven’t seen a shoe repair shop in decades where I live.

Also, what’s with the open ratchet mechanism? Why is that a good thing? I feel like I’m late to this one...

I've been keeping an eye out for this one. It's the 3482. Same as the regular 3/8 version except it has a 1/4 drive on the opposite site, like the old Proto/Vogel double duty rats.

I think that's probably a pretty unique usa made option. Lol.

I also have no practical need for it but I want a Wright 4488 scaffolding ratchet, with a Wrightgrip 7/8 wrench as a handle. Soft hammer face (intended usage is as a hammer!!!), and pinned 7/8 socket on open gear 1/2 drive.

My SIL lent my wife one of her suitcases for a trip, and when she gave it to us she said watch out for the broken zipper. My cobbler is pretty good with all kinds of repairs, and I was going to pick up the repaired suitcase from him. I figured I'd pay to fix the zipper as a favor to my SIL for lending us the case.:)

Lots of shoe repair shops in the city. Pavement tends to wear out soles before shoes are at the end of their life .

Open gear rats are easier to clean. Just blast it with wd and wipe it off.

I would like to hear a comparison. I am.especially interested in the back drag.

OK, I'll pull my Thorsen out and do that over the weekend.

The backdrag on the Wright is much lower than the Thorsen. The selector/pawl is much thinner and more angled on the Wright, and moves much more easily. Probably a less robust spring.

I have an irrational love for open- gear ratchets but haven't picked up a Wright yet due to the cost and utter redundancy, so you definitely ****... I'd also be interested in a comparison, not a lot of chatter here about that style of Wright. I'd buy a long handle in a heartbeat, but already have almost all the other standard length versions in 3/8", working on 1/2".
