Snap on 9/16" combo wrench SOEX18....$29.25

WrightGrip 9/16" combo wrench 1218.....$13.24

Both good wrenches but since I sell Wright tools,I'd say the $16.01 difference makes the sale.

I agree Muffin Man. The open ends of my Wright wrenches work very well (although not "Wright Grip"). It is a pain once in a while, as my 13/16" is kinda tight on brass fittings, especially if they are dirty. On the other hand, I would rather they be a bit tight instead of rounding the fittings.

Wright #1218 = 7-15/16" Long
Snap-on # SOEX18 = 8-3/4" Long

Both good wrenches but length makes the sale. :bounce:

Merk is wright.....that extra 3/4" or so is worth $16.01,especially when you need to compensate for lack of size.:bounce:

In all seriousness, Wright should seriously consider making their wrenches longer. They already have a VERY nice beam profile -- they'd be a serious wrench to reckon with if they were longer. :pimpflash

I think they are pretty serious......82+ years in business making 100% American made tools using 100% American made steel.Plus an extra savings of an average 30% off other USA made tools.:)

Merk......it's nice to chat with you again.

Why doesn't Wright make their wrenches in the standard professional lengths like the other pro brands? Once you get used to a longer style wrench; the short ones really don't have the ease of leverage... do they have longer styles?

I imagine it'd be quite easy for them to extend the length of their wrenches -- all they'd need is new forging dies. :dunno:

Nice chatting with you too sir. :D

Snap-on # SOEX18 = 8-3/4" Long

Im the king of leverage, I own many different sizes of cheater bars and i also would like to see Wright offer a long pattern wrench option but 13/16" difference in length doesnt make enough difference in regards to a 9/16 bolt head to even discuss in my opinion. As i said i have many different sizes of cheaters ranging from 12" to 5', It never crossed my mind to have 1" cheater fabbed up.

I agree with Hiball. I can see 13/16" can make a difference if you are working with a stubby, but shouldn't make much of a difference with a standard size tool. :bounce:

We are talking wrenches aren't we?

I use Snap-on as the length standard by which I compare other brands to -- they're the optimal length per wrench opening size.

Merk...please enlighten us as to how you arrived at the Snap-on length as the baseline for comparison of all other brands.:)

curious about that myself. i would bet that many most own multiple lengths of the same size wrench. pick what you like, stubbby, short, standard, long, extra long, xxl, etc. what should the "standard" length be? i like my bonney made matco wrenches. they are my favorite wrench but are also slightly shorter than my s-o wrenches. i think you are in love with the wrench more than it's length. i doubt if sears made a raised panel craftsman the same exact length as your as your s-o you would be real enthused with it. i do wish that wright made a longer wrench with wright grip but it does not need to be the same length as the snap-on. i also hope that when i get my cornwell set courtesy of hiball that they are the longest wrenches in my tool chest.

Both wrenches are great, but I prefer the WrightGrip design b/c they are less likely to chew up a fastener. And man, they sure have nice comfy beams. The difference in length is generally less than an inch per size; not very significant IMO. If I need serious leverage in a wrench, I bust out the HP box wrenches or XL combos.

...and Wright, if you are listening, you need to make the WrightGrips in Metric. I would buy a set today if you did.

I have a set of both and don't find that the Wright Grip chews up a fastener any LESS than the flank drive, maybe even more so. That being said, the comfort of the thicker beam on the Wright compensates for any length issues when compared to a flank drive.

The satin finish is nice too.

On the subject of wrench length...

It is my understanding that standard length wrench handles are sized such that an average strength mechanic will apply approximately the correct torque on the fastener. This is why the larger the wrench opening size, the longer the handle.

Richard (or someone else), please help me on this. Does Wright make WrightGrip in Metric? The above posts seem to indicate that they do not. The catalog does not seem to offer them.

BUT...on page 55 of the Wright Tool Perfecting Performance catalog I just received, it CLEARLY shows a picture of a "17mm WrightGrip" wrench among the SAE combos.

What gives? :headscrat

expatriated.....Wright does not make the WrightGrip in Metric but you are right about the page 55 photo. My guess is that the folks that put together the catalog for Wright must have done a little Photo shoppin'!:headscrat

I should hit up Wright to give you a free tool for catching the mistake....no one has ever said anything about it.:bounce:

Yeah! and that free tool should be that same 17mm WrightGrip wrench:bounce:

Do you know if they at least have plans to make the WrightGrip in metric? Should I hold off buying a set or just buy them now since they aren't coming out any time soon?

With the input from a couple of different tool forums....I think that Wright is seriously looking into making Metric WrightGrip wrenches.
As far as the timeline of such a decision....I don't know when that will happen.

If they're gonna make some forging dies for metric wrenches, they oughtta go ahead and make some [l-o-n-g] dies while they're at it. :D

Yeah.. Good idea.. Maybe we can get Wright to quit stamping USA on there ratchets to save some pennies on the manufacturing process so they can stretch another 5/8" for you. Richard, What do you think?

If Wright wants to keep making short wrenches, that's their business, I really don't give a damn; but they're missing the boat by not making longer wrenches.

There isnt any problems with there boat, At least its still anchored in US waters and its been there for 80+ years. As far as there wrenches being anywhere from 3/8" to 13/16" shorter than SO doesnt make them "Short". Yes, the general concensious is that we would like to see them make a long pattern wrench set, along with Wright grip metric. I dont understand why you judge every tool against SO as if they are the only tool company that ever manufactured a quality tool. When it comes to "Standard" size wrench sets ive ran into many more problems with my wrench being too long, rather than to short in my automotive past.

The bottom line is I'd love to buy some Wright combination wrenches because I think they gotta great rounded beam profile and a good looking box end to boot, but the short overall length is a major limiting factor in my final purchasing decision.

Merk...why all the feelings man?:(

First you feel as you are being ignored....now you feel you don't give a damn.

Your strong visceral feelings that are palpable might just be the push that Wright sees to begin producing a little bit longer wrench.I believe with the strong feelings you have express just shows your concern for high quality tool producers such as Wright and I applaud your feelings....I even validate them.

Nay no such vituperation will be uttered from me because of your feelings.

Thank you for your insightful feelings and suggestions.:)
