WrightGrip vs SK SureGrip

Has anyone compared the two open ended sides of these wrenches?
Looking to upgrade my current lineup and was pretty set on buying the Wrightgrips but now I am wondering if I could kill two birds with one stone and get the SK's with the added ratcheting feature.
I am not concerned with not having the regular box end as I have other sets of regular combinations.

I am focused specifically on comparing open end performance and "gripping" ability.

I sent the tester in those videos (who is a member on here as well) a message inquiring about a comparison to the Wrightgrip and Flank drive plus.

I know woodstockva has done a comparison of wright grip and fdp and others showing how well the open ends work

I would like to see these up against new Carlyle open ends aswell as the new sk it seems even some Asian makes are starting with the teeth at the open end

The carlyle ones would indeed be a good choice to add into the mix. What I like with the sk is for only a few $ more you get the added in ratcheting end.

I have experienced first hand Wright-Grip stomping on Flank Drive Plus, Matcos equivalent, carlyle equivalent, as well as HF, Sunex, Mac, Cornwell, and GW standard open ends.


Nothing touches Wright Grip. I can brace a 13mm wrench with the open end on the inner tie-rod against a subframe, heat the jam nut red, and practically do a pull-up trying to free it. The wrench only slips if it shears the metal off.

15 year old oxygen sensors come out with the open end.

Brake Line fillings come off with the open end.

If the 12-point slips, you're going to need a turbo socket. No other wrench would have a chance, the metal is now rust. Matcos impact spline stuff MIGHT grab harder, but it's a 6 point socket, not a 12 point combo wrench.

If the open end slips, you either pulled on it at a crappy angle, or you need a torch.


The ONLY downsides are that they don't make super long patterns (although you'd likely just destroy things with it), and that they are maybe an 1/8 of an inch thicker than a Snap on at the ends.




Wright > Anything else.

Satin finish is also key.

Being that Wright has a very comfortable rounded beam and SK is the polar opposite, I see no reason to consider SK.

I do not use the wrenches for 8+ hours a day every day. I also do not use the box end that much.

My only concern is open end gripping power, if the Sk with grip just as well as the Wrightgrip I will go with the Sk, if the Wrightgrip holds better I will go with the Wright. The ratcheting box end would be an added bonus.

I may end up buying one of each and doing a test video myself.

I think I'm gonna do satin for my Wrightgrips. All my other wrenches are full polish. Time to try something different. I ain't gonna lay on my deathbed and wish I'd have tried some satin finish wrenches :lol:

Full polish look so pretty and are so easy to clean...

Satin are easier to keep a hold of...

Man... If only I could buy both... And not get griped at...

Live a little, hang it out there some! I figure Wright tool is an industrial brand so may as well get them in an industrial type utilitarian finish.

While I do appreciate a comfortable handle, I meant in this particular comparison of the wright to the sk. I realize the wrights are more comfortable but since I dont use them professionally the tradeoff from less comfort vs the added ratcheting end is worth it to me, as long as its not at the expense of gripping power on the open end as thats what im after.

If the wrights open ends are truly better I have no issue with having separate regular combinations and ratcheting I was just looking for a head to head comparison similar to the video of the WrightGrip vs Flank Drive Plus.

SK has focused discussion on the internals of this wrench; the ratchet mechanism, the open end grip, even the internal stress distribution. But the most obvious feature, the X frame design, is what I would examine before purchasing. The X frame limits the clearance in a way no other wrench does. This is slightly ameliorated by the very fine ratchet mechanism, but not the open end side.
I would also look long and hard at the lengths of whatever wrench interests you. Having an open end that can transmit 600ftlbs of torque won't help if you can't produce that load. Longer wrenches are almost always advantageous. Whenever we talk about tool strength or gripping power we have to have an honest discussion about how much force we can realistically produce comfortably.

The wright has a more conventional design. Hopefully if Woodstockva does a review, he'll review the usability of these wrenches and not just grip strength.

Love my satin Wright grips, you guys saying the satin finish being harder to clean are cracking me up. It's not like the satin has deep nooks and crannies like a Thomas' English muffin. They wipe off easy.

I have SO, Wright and SK. All are good. The Wright seem to be the beefiest and less expensive than SO. IMO, SK is a notch below Wright, but still great quality.

I have to admit that I'm a bit confused by all the different Wrench sets that Wright produces. Are all Wright comination wrenches Wright Grip models ? How do you know if they are?

I do not have any of the SAE SK X-Frames yet (only the 10mm sample that SEMA attendees received)....so I cannot duplicate my Wrightgrip/Snap-on Flank Drive+ tests with them. If/when I get a set, I will add that to the list of upcoming videos....I am interested to see how it will perform also! :)

I can't make hide nor hair on their site.

What sets are the most imminent sizes in each of full polish? Satin?
