Wrist Watch

I know that this isn't considered a tool but I'm interested to hear what type of wrist watch you have and how well it holds up to the abuse it can receive by working on or around vehicles and equipment. I have just bought lower end timex watches which do not last very long. Maybe I need to invest in a better quality watch. I do like a watch that shows both regular and military time and has a flexible band. Any thoughts or comments would do be greatly appreciated

Various time zones, 12/24hr clock, alarm, stopwatch, etc.
The best feature is the atomic clock update. Gets a signal from Fort Collins, in Colorado, and updates the time every morning...

I paid 140 for my first one, and my wife got me another on ebay for $40 shipped!
I wear it sledding, waterskiing, working on boats, etc., and it is extremely durable.

I generally buy inexpensive Timex or Casio watches. I always get them with a rubber wrist band. I don't like metal bands while I'm working and leather and fabric ones tend to "stink" after a while. I coach lacrosse and always wear a watch (hence the stink). We often play music in the dressing room before and after a game. I have a Timex that is ipod compatible. When I want to address the team I push a button and off goes the music. When I'm finished on it goes. The kids still haven't figured out how I do it!

I just bought this watch about a month ago, it is tough as nails. The crystal is sapphire like a rolex and the case is solid titanium. I have had Luminox watches for about 8 years now. I love the watches, but the last one I bought had problems with the crown, the plastic case wore out and wouldn't seal out water. I looked at buying a nicer version, but they were way more money. until I found this place. I absolutely love the watch! Titanium and carbon Fiber! It has been on my wrist through a bunch of work, from welding to cutting wood. I have heard the watch scrap on metal... not a single scratch!

Me too. It ain't pretty, but it is pretty much bulletproof and is hyper-accurate. Have a Seiko dive watch for sentimental reasons. Wore one in Vietnam. Was about the only piece that would stand up to the elements back in the day.

I have a Citizen ecoDrive. Has a built-in solar cell in the dial, so it's never supposed to need batteries. I like watches that have the day displayed in "easy" to read large #'s. This one is set up to know the days of the year from now until the worlds collide, so I never have to change the date. Do have to advance it forward and back at daylight saving/standard time change.

The watch I have now wasn't expensive - got it from an online retailer Blue Dial watches for I think about $150. I've had it a couple of years and it still looks new. I don't wear it doing stuff that would damage it.

I never worn a wrist watch nor do I even own one. I carry a cheap pocket watch in the watch pocket of my jeans for the occasional time I wish to know the time.
I am really glad Levi's still puts pocket watch pockets on their stuff.

Working around vehicles and equipment is going to eventually snag your watch and scar it. Doesn't really matter what kind you have (although I too have a Solar G shock and like it.) Might I suggest one that goes around your belt loop? Not like the pocket watches of yesteryear but the new versions that hang off your beltloop, I think timex has one...

I have a Casio G-shock solar wavecepter on right now. I've had it about 4 years - never done anything to it - and its always acurate to 1/1000 of a second, because it syncs to the atomic clock. It even resets itself on daylight time. It has a second clock that can show Zulu time for flying. I don't have to take it off for boating, or welding or grinding. I do take it off for business meetings, because it's kinda ugly. $86 for that one.

I also have a Casio Wavecepter watch with a gold "traditional handed" face that I use for business - same as the above - never needs touched, has an LCD window with day/date or second time zone, and perfectly accurate. $44.

For formal occasions I have a couple of fancy gold watches that aren't nearly as maintenance free - have to change batteries periodically, have to reset day date periodically.

I also have a couple fancy automatic wind watches - one Rolex - and they are junk compared to the others - inaccurate - PIA to keep running. I don't wear them.

I Think of watches like I think of tools. Yes you can buy one that will do the same job for a small amount of money. When you use one that is precise and made with the best materials, you feel a sensation that you are in as much control of the situation as you can be.

I have two Seiko chronographs that I wear for work. I bought them in 1995 and they both still work great. Yes they will get damaged at work but I take them in once a year and get the crystals replaced and the bracelets tightened.
For yard work and most activities, I wear a Rolex 1500 series, an Omega military, or a Jean Richard/Aquastar.
If I am Dressing up, I wear a Rolex Submariner or a Sicura jump hour.

Also don't wear rings, for the same reason while working on the car..

I am in the G-SHock camp. I have the acid skin problem, and I also have a "magnetic" personality, so any mechanical watch will lose from 5 to 10 minutes a day, as I wear the watch. It was too much hassle, so I gave up wearing watches for a while. I would dig in my pants to check my phone, or look at the clock radio in my truck. All of which were inconvenient to me.
My wife got the G-shock, and though big, it does more than I need it to do, and it is accurate, because of the electronics, and the nuclear clock calibration. I love it. It is amazing how quickly you become used to using it.

Daily wear is a Luminox.

My work watch is a Casio Illuminator (?), this is the second one in 10 or so years, as the strap wears out. It has stood up to all kinds of chemicals, cement, sea water, and a good bath cleans it right back up. For a backup work watch, I have a very cheap wind it up yourself Timex, with Roman numerals on the face, that has never let me down.

For a dress watch, I have a TAG-Huere that I bought at the duty free in Bahrain, which I consider a better watch (both in looks and quality), than my entry level Rolex, which I bought in Singapore, but it does not have the sapphire crystal, I wound up giving it to my nephew when he graduated from college. For my 30 year service award with Halliburton, I chose another Tag-Huere, but I have never taken it out of the box. I was hoping to be around to get my 35 year Rolex, but I figured that even if I lasted that long, which I didn't, they would either up the service time required to 40 years, or find some excuse NOT to give the field employees somthing that nice.

I've had the same Seiko wristwatch for 30 years now, plus I have a couple of my dad's Timex watches from the 1950s I wear from time to time. However, I always take them off when working on cars because it beats them up and they just get in the way. As far as that goes, these days clocks are everywhere - on your cellphone, radios, appliances, computers, pretty much anything with a display on it.

Prior to that, I had a Rolex Tudor (the "bargain" Rolex brand). SS and 12karat electroplate band, with a 12karat screw-down crown and a 12karat bezel. The electroplate on the band was only on the outside of the links. I still have it, but it needs a new crystal and a new dial, and the dial can only be serviced by Rolex in Switzerland (so I was told). Cost for cleaning/rework and replacement would be way more than the watch is worth.

What you say about the upkeep on a Rolex is so true. Mine was/is a chronometer, and from what I remember the most basic model to carry the Rolex name was the "AirWeight". Anyhow, Rolex required a yearly service, which would cost about $400 to lubricate, adjust, and clean the watch. I had it appraised a few years after I bought it, and was told that the paint on the numerals was cracking, but that it was worth about 6 times what I had given for it. I do know that after I gave it to my nephew, he had trouble with it keeping time, and it was a huge pain in the *** to get the authorized service center to get it back to working properly, at least 2 returns, IIRC.

I have a Bulova Accutron stashed someplace, and the face looked almost identical to that of the Rolex, except the Accutron hummed, and the Rolex ticked.

I have a nice watch Rolex GMT that I have not worn in years. I also use my cell phone as my watch. I did wear my watch while working on stuff for a long time and it never really had issues. Since i stopped wearing it I have become accustomed to not having anything on my wrist. I don't like to wear a watch at all anymore.

I wear a Citizens Eco-Drive Calibre 8700 daily. My wife bought it for me as a Christmas present about 5 years ago. It replaced my Seiko kinetic energy watch that I had worn for about eight years. The Seiko suddenly died one day and my wife suprised me with this one. Its been great. It looks great considering the daily wear.

I use my phone most of the time for a watch. For me a watch just gets in the way when I need to get my hand in somewhere.

For dress I bought a movado fiero about 2 years ago. I don't usually spoil myself on cloths or other things besides tools but I did with a watch. It's all tungsten carbide and has a saphire crystal glass so it's pretty much scratch proof. I'm pretty rough on my things so that is one of the reasons I went with the higher end watch. Figured in the end I will be better off because I won't ruin a bunch of watches that are half the price of this one. I have brushed it up against stone blocks before(on accident) and it didn't scratch it. It still looks brand new. I'm impressed with it, if I don't loose it it will last a long time and still look new.

My watch sits on my tool box at work. I wear a Luminox. In my former life tritium marking and being able to read the watch at night were important to me. It's carried over to my current much softer life. It's a great watch.

I wear this Cabela's field watch everyday. Mine has the orange face like the photo, but they also make it in black and olive faces. I get lots of complements on it. It's light and thin, so you can do a fair amount of work w/o it getting in the way. I've replaced the band with a basic rubber one due to the "stink" comments other have with fabric or leather...

My dress watch may seem like a weird choice, but I have this retro red LED Fossil. It reminds me of a Star War's watch I had as a kid that had the red LED display. It only displays after you push a button, and then goes back dark after a couple seconds. Basic for sure.
