Wrong color rollup doors installed??

Well as we are finishing the build of our new shop they have installed the wrong color rollup doors. These appear to be in primer, and I'm being told my options are paint the doors white or upgrade to the industrial door that comes in white. I was clear that I wanted white from the beginning so the builder has offered to cover the cost. He doesn't like the idea of eating the cost of the new doors but is willing do so since this is his mistake. Any advice or experience in this situation? These are heavy duty slat roll up doors.

I would make them switch them out, at the very least take them down, paint them in an auto shop properly, and reinstall.

As someone else said, if they are going to paint them they would need to take them down to do it properly. Even then I have my doubts as to having that white cover the gray and look decent.

The least cost route I would think is to swap them out with factory white ones. Rollup doors don't cost that much.

Personally, I like that gray... It breaks up the existing white/red and adds a little contrast. Plus, white doors are like white cars... The smallest bit of dirt and you notice it...

Personally I like the grey better. However if YOU don't like them as much as the white take the contractor up on the offer of white doors. No one else here will have yo look at it everyday. It is important you like it or else you'll kick yourself daily.

Contractor has already admitted fault, work something out. But I wouldn't paint the doors.

I think the gray looks sharp, but if it is truly only a primer, I'd be concerned about how it is going to look after a few years of the elements. If it is a finish coat, I'd ask for some money back and roll with it.

But if you are set on white, make the contractor eat it and get the white factory finish doors.

Can you verify its primer? If so, it will likely be a flat sheen. Good luck keeping a flat color clean if you end up staying gray. You would also need to verify if the primer is UV stable.

If they can be professionally painted, I'd go that route.

I like the Gray as well, but if the gray is not a topcoat I would either have them painted or replaced.

It's all opinion. What will the contractor offer you to keep them....$$..... If you want the white and the gray is going to bother you everytime you look at the gray door, then make him remove and change out the doors. Good luck.

I'm liking the gray too. It's unique and considering this is your business I'm think expanding on that might work to your advantage. After all, how many times have you given directions to a red and gray building.


I'd have the doors top coated, the man door and the trim all matched simply because it stands out nicely.

I’d keep the white surround. Change the man door to match. White doors in a commercial shop are going to get marked up fast

The doors look like the ones I have in my shop. They are gray and are powder coated, but look like they are primed. Mine are still gray and look as good now as they did 18 years ago when installed. I like the look of the gray with the red building.

I'm loving the gray. Big white panels against that shade of red looks a bit Santa Clause. You're not giving away truck lifts are you?

The white trim works against the red, and the gray is a nice subtle colour to accentuate the details a bit.

But if it is primer, it will not hold up to weather long. You will be painting it in a year or two. I would put a proper cover coat on it if it is primer.

I agree the gray looks good, with the lettering white and the office door white divides the building, one part business and the other operations.

It has a very clean look about it.

I too like the gray but whatever approach you take you should start by contacting the door manufacturer to find out what the existing finish is and if it needs to be or can be painted.

I don't think anyone is saying it can't be repainted. It is just an issue that maybe a repainting job might not be up to the quality that you might get from a factory finish. If the contractor decides to throw his cheapest (dumbest/highest) guy on it with some rattle cans or a roller and brush, it is going to look like ****.

The question I would ask is - why did they install the doors in just primer? They cant be painted properly now! And - the gray looks really good.

I like the gray. Since these door roll on themselves, I would just keep the gray, get a discount and paint the man door to match.
