Hey everyone. I'm in the market for a deep set of metric impacts. I'm a occasional use DIY guy, so I'm not looking for something that fits that bill.

I've heard pretty good things about the HF impacts and there's a coupon for 34683-6VGA 13 piece set for $17.99. I think that's going to be hard to beat, but I thought I'd throw it out there. Besides, I hate having to drive there and if I can put some cash in another fellow GJ member's pocket I'd much rather do that.

Two of my buddies have had good luck with the stanley impacts walmart carries. I dont think they sell them in-store anymore (I was lucky enough to find an SAE set the other day on clearance though) but they are still availible online for web to store shipping.

As far as I know their still made in Taiwan (the ones I got are) and are decent quality. Anyway, might be another way to go if no one here has anything.

Edit: they also have a lifetime warrenty to.

Yes, I was looking at those as well. The sizes in the set skip a few important ones though. For the same $ I think I'm better off with the HF ones.

Go to sears and get these

http://www.sears.com/shc/s/p_10153_...ics+Tools&sName=View+All#specificationsAnchor

You have both sae/impact short and deep and they work fine. Comparable to snappy and never break.

Or these
http://www.amprotools.net/product_List.aspx?productid=1152&partnerid=18&categoryid=2&mode=show

Both of those are reasonable and I have never broke a socket with a heavy duty Ir or breaker bar with a 8ft cheater bar.

I have the ampro short mm set with a few cman mixed in and cmans deep set. Good for hard 8hr every day use. I woulddnt recommend HF shitola sockets. I had one blow apart on my IR and if I wasnt wearing my prescription glases I might be blind in one eye.

Remeber one thing. Look closely at the HF. They are made out of chrome vanadium steel. So they are basically the same material as a reg chrome socket. So all they are essentially is glorified chrome sockets painted black. NG.

The ones I posted are made out of chrome molybedenum. I believe that is the spelling and is the same metal snappys are made out of. Never break..maybe wear out after 5-10 years.

Of course when one grows legs I do buy snappy as truck credit is easier now I got a family with a 6 month old son. No more deep pockets. :lol_hitti

Just my 2c's and sorry for long rant

Ozzy you use the AMPRO impact sockets everyday. I take it your a full time auto tech. I might have try a set and see how they work.

They sell Ampro sockets in Advance Auto and their cheap. (Link Listed Below). I'm a beginner and this will be my first set of impacts. I will be using them everyday. I might have to check out the AMPRO 1/2" metric 6 point set. Ozzy, can you tell me more about the dailty use your Ampro sockets get?

Thanks for the heads up about the Ampros. They're well priced as well, and hearing that you're that happy with them is good to know!

Curdy, sears also has their 10pc deep impact sockets in the craftsman club this month for $50. I know thats probably more then you wanted to spend, but IMO their good quality.

I would go with the AMPRO. If an everyday tech uses them on a daily basis you can’t go wrong. My advice Craftsman (CRAPSMAN). Craftsman use to make good tools back in the day. Now the quality has diminished. Sears is relying on the name Craftsman to sell tools not the quality.

Sorry but when I worked in the tool department I hardly ever saw an impact socket come back broken. Did have a few that were plain worn out from use. I think impact sockets are one of the tools their still selling that are a good buy.

Yes Im a full time tech. Did it for years. Escaped in 2005 for the life of a truck driver and now right back in the garage now I have a son and possible future wife. Wanted to be home for them. No life for a family and otr driver out 2-3 weeks.

Anyway I primarily pull transmission r n'r. But the shop Im working at is also a full general repair shop and we do EVERYTHING! Even state inspoections, etc.

I have not worn out or broke a Ampro socket yet. The short ones are one of the set I have. Only thing that ***** is it didnt come with a 13 and 18 when I bought it. I bought sears crapsman to add those. They are fine. I beat on them Ampros with a hammer to get stuck bolts out. Beat on them with a old heavy duty 241 Ir gun. Even a 8ft cheater bar on a 24 inch great neck breaker bar to get a stubborn lug nut off some professional err idoit put on a truck recently. Didnt not break the ampro socket, but broke the gn bar. So got the crapsmen breaker out and ended brteaking the stud off..lol!. I can vouch no issues with those ampros at all. I also belive they are limited lifetime warranty so you can mail them in for replacement if need be.

Only con is this. The lettering is some crappy paint so after a while you wont be able to read the ampro socket to see the size. But if you been doing it long enough as I have, then you should be able to distinguish what size it is.

Want me to take pics of how beat up the ampros are I think I can tomorrow.

As a full time tech in the area I live in I cant afford Snapon unless for speciality, so I have tried many different brands. And these I liked the best.

Now hf...forget it. They almost took my eye out once when it shattered.

And as I said. Look closely at the hf sockets, they are chrome vanadium steel, nothing more than a clorified chrome socket painted black. Take a look at the ampro or cman and they are chrome molybdenum which any true impact is made out of. And a lot thicker.

I think that set you linkied to is different than mine. WHen I got mine it was 50 and some change. If I recall correctly from when I bought them in 2002ish, they had 2 different sets. One like you posted for 15.00 and the better ones for 50ish. Make sure to check the socket for chrome molybedum. Could also be Advance phased them out in favor of cheaper Ampros and the new gearwrench stuff they are carrying. But I distinctly remeber they had 2 different sets in price and quality 2002, but cant find them online.
