"Lifetime" vs "stainless"????? As you must know, the Lifetime, while the same, is much more rare. So I'll ask, Lifetime only?

Again, I beg the question. for collectors, there is a difference between Lifetime and Stainless. I have the stainless and may be willing to talk, but if you want Lifetime, I can't help you.

While they are the same basic ratchet, the signature on it will say "lifetime" or "stainless". Sears sold both and once discontinued, both became instant classics with Cman collectors want. I have no idea. why. Anyway, prices for these are dependent condition, and on your needs and desires. All in all, aside from their big heads, they are fine ratchets and are great on boats in salt water. That's were mine are.

The problem with these is that they are not repairable.... They are collectible... I have been looking for one at a good price for years.... I'm actually surprised at all the Old time GJers here who say that have never seen one before....

They sold them in the 80's... Obviously, something didn't work out....

I see them on Ebay time to time using 'stainless craftsman' as a search... Most go for $40-$100+ depending on the condition.

Sold one marked lifetime in 1/4" drive in nice shape on ebay for I think $26 a few months ago. Did not seem to be a big deal of an item to me or the bidders.

Well then Bolster, I have to ask the question. After hearing them delightful young gals singing "On the Highway into Heaven", I jus had to ask myself, is Bolster Bona Fide??? Now, them little gals want to know, " is he a suit er? " Now, If 'n y'all don't tell me, I'll have to have my VERY southern bred Florida wife pay y'all a visit. And her accent is about the same as that blind feller at the radio station. We both like that ole timey music. :lol_hitti

Sorry for the confusion above, boys, was just trying out my Irish brogue. I'm back in character now. As regards my being a suit-er, I got to worry about gettin' the fambly farm back first.

Say, one o' you fellers verify that the "Lifetime" is a chrome plated rat? Sure looks it to me.

I collect Craftsman. Been watching ebay but they are in bad shape, engraved, or go for crazy money. There was a guy who had some rebuild kits.

Think lifetime is the same, just not made of stainless. Still trying to get the definitive answer as to who made it.

When the SS came out Sears advertised the banded sockets with the ratchet. The sockets I have been able to find at the flea market. They are not however stainless.

If or when I get some ratchets I will have the matching sockets.

Yes the "lifetime" versions are hard to find. I have the stainless set and would like to match it with the life time, and you can find ratchet repair kits on ebay sometimes, just got on today and I now have a repair kit for all drive sizes. I have an extra 3/8 stainless craftsman that I would like to trade for a lifetime version but does not look like that will happen.

Funny how GJ can create a market for an "wanted item" When I had a lifetime ratchet here and on ebay a few months back nobody wanted it. Well, one person did for $26 but it took weeks and no long threads like this.

I remember when these came out in the '80's. My friends and I thought that a stainless rachet was a solution looking for a problem, and completely unneeded. They were also kind of pricey (for a teenager working part time at a grocery store). If I had thought that they might be a good investment, I might have bought some.

They're great for using around the boat or on dive trips. We tend to have a goodly amount of salt water in our neck of the woods.

Just confirmed it. My 3/8 Lifetime is chromed steel. Magnet stuck to it. When I bought it off ebay I didn't realize the Lifetime wasn't stainless and was disapointed when it arrived. Didn't realize there was a difference. Now I'm kinda glad I guess. Down side - not real impressed with the functionality. The snap ring that holds the ratchet mechanism in pops off on occasion. Is the ratchet mechanism on the stailess ratchets stainless? It doesn't look like it is in the photos. Makes a stailess handle kinda pointless doesn't it?:headscrat

No the mechanism is not stainless they are the same on both ratchets. Just the handle and head is stainless. If you don't want the 3/8 lifetime let me know I will take it off your hands.
