There is a Barcalo 723 on eBay right now. It is in the jeep tools 5 pc set and is just over a hundred dollars. Link

That wrench is very very rare and demands a premium on eBay and at G503.com of course the other items you are after fetch some money too and are hard to find, in the correct era and patterns you are after.

I have some 8" Diamond Calk Horseshoe ones that are jeep correct but not a Barcalo or Williams. I mostly have Vlchek jeep wrenches and a few others but not many 723s.

The 732 on ebay looks to have been modified, take a look at the close up, looks like someone has increased the size of the 3/8

There are WWII jeep tool wrenches mainly the 723 size that have hit $300+
Jeep tool collectors (the ********* ones) are crazy about them and some of them are quite rare. These are very specific wrenches that where made for a short period of time during WWII and where issued in toolkits for the Jeeps and some other trucks and motor pool tool kits. More can be see here: Link

There is a discussion going on the most expensive Jeep tools here: link

I am a member of the g503.com board as well and only buy my wrenches at flea markets and such, do to the high price of some of them on eBay and the boards.

The 723A's are a different size 3/8 - 1/2 where as the correct jeep tool kit would have been a 723 3/8 - 7/16. Jeep tools are very specific. Basically people are trying to recreate the kits that are for those vehicles and nothing else.

riley.m, the numbers on these wrenches and other older wrenches where an early attempt at a standard numbering system, Alloy Aircraft has info here: Link

I don't think the 731b was part of a WWII tool kit. Check out this auction that just ended last night for 5 723 wrenches: Link

Agreed!! but i also think that spend so much for a wrench is not worth it. I would have loved to search the flee market for the 723 but where i am from there are no estate sale/flee market.

anyway if you happen to find a extra B-B 723 in the flee market plz rememeber me mate :)
You might check out this real nice guy on ebay
user name is 159tisch

Good luck
62 bird

I can't seem to find him

Thank you so much but I already have a Fairmount 723

OK, But this Fairmont is a 723 A

For your Barcalo viewing enjoyment:

Before and after. These appear to be Cadmium plated.

I have an all black Herbrand 1723 7/16 X 3/8. What is the difference between the 723 and 1723?

kaydee.jpg

By the way, I have several dozen of these 700- Series wrenches and they are all over the flea markets, pawn shops and Surplus stores where I am. They sell for about a quarter to fifty cents. I will have to keep a close eye out for these now Thanks.

Here are a couple more I just dug up real quick.

Blacknwhitepit, the herbrand you have is the same as a 723 wrench. The number system wasn't the same from company to company. Some use 723 some use 1723. The important thing is the size of the wrench 7/16 X 3/8. The AA site has a list of old wrench sizes vs the industry-standard numbers for open-end wrenches: Link

From MY collecting......

There were military issued Craftsman tools. Most however, were New Britain. New Britain was the maker of the Craftsman line stamped circle U, circle H and BE. Some BE drive tools were issued during the war and there is really no way of telling what was and what wasn't.

As for the wrenches, any given manufacturer could have been in any kit issued. They could have had VlChek, NB, Fairmont, Bonney and many others all combined. IIRC, only Plomb used a different numbering system. While other manufacturers were using 1xxx numbers, Plomb used 3xxx numbers during the war. Any tool with only 3 digits like the 723, would have most likely been made prior to the war.

That means they could have been sitting in a warehouse for many years before they were issued as Jeep kits or the like. Once the war time orders were issued, they demanded the standardization of the numbering system i.e. the 1xxx numbers. Plomb seems to have escaped this because they were supplying many other tools to the war effort. I guess they could pull some strings.

Please add to the discussion.

hope you must have received the funds Elroy??

Your package shipped out this afternoon via UPS.

Hope you enjoy your new Barcalo-Buffalo. Advise Elroy on the pliers. Were these a good match to the kit you're putting together??

elroy, who was the mfr of the pliers? i have an identical pair.

We have NO Idea.

Or as some would say, No Ideal

The pliers are un-marked save for the "Forged in USA". This die mark was present in both halves of the pliers. rmjseeds made an offer on the small BB and we negotiated a sale price on both wrenches. Elroy added the pliers as a bonus.

Good eye, Snapmom! That wrench is ruined. Someone's bound to be ticked off.

I always passed up Barcalos thinking they were junk.

Well Elroy has news for ya. They are junk.

The identification stamping is crude and they are generally not well finished. Why do you think Uncle Sam bought them ?? It sure the hell wasn't because of the mirror quality chrome. The ONLY reason these POS tools sell is because of their initial application. If they were OEM for a Yugo you would have to pay to have them taken away.

Actually Elroy lucked out finding that small BB and considering how hard they are to find and the excellent condition that wrench was in we almost gave it away. The day rmjseeds made the offer the dam Jeep board was down for maintenance. Looking back it appears there are a lot of guys looking for this particular BB.

Elroy was glad to see it go. We bets "seeds" sells for triple what he paid Elroy. As far a wrench is concerned its a true POS in Elroy's opinion.

High priced junk.

Have to agree with you, they are of real poor quality if you consider other wrenches during their era and No!! there is no way i am going to sell that wrench in future....

So did that BB meet with your approval? It was in pretty good shape. Doubt you find one much cleaner.

From the sound of it, Elroy should have asked more.

Than again, not really. We were glad to see it go to someone with interest in that particular brand. The price was fine. Don't let Elroy yank your chain.

We would also solicit comments on the pliers.

Glad to hear it's a keeper.

I am really happy with both the wrenches. A definite keeper. Pliers on the other hand have a good finish but not WWII spec but post war. Although I am really happy I got it.

So one down few more to go from my wishlist.
:cough::cough: Elroy, you listenings:cough::cough:

Hey UB,

If you consider Barcalo-Buffalo junk then what's your take on Barcalo. I always considered them real waste of my time and pure junk.

I bought a couple of them many years ago when I was still learning what was good, and what was junk. I too consider them junk though I still have those I bought years ago in my extras wrench pile. I do not consider one of those any better quality than the other. I cannot figure out why anyone would want them beyond the Jeep restoration guys.
