What I am looking for are spud wrenches that are the offset type, open end with the other end being pointed. I know these aren't commonly used in the garage, but I was hoping some of you guys might have some laying around taking up space. Looking for vintage Kleins, ABCo/USS, BIS, & Woodings-Verona. I have included 2 pics of 1 wrench (BIS) as an example. I am a Union Iron Worker by trade & collect these wrenches. Please pm me if you have any of these. Thanks!

See posts #19 & #22 for more examples....thanks

I've got a 1/2"dr spud ratchet. Don't really wanna sell it though. Thought it was kinda unique when I got it is all.

Good luck with your search. TTT!

Yeah, I was at the high perf swap last sun, try to go as time permits. I check the few guys that have the used tools & they usually aren't the vintage brands I'm looking for, although, I did find an older Klein a few years back there. It's also hard to stay focused when I'm looking for car or motorcycle parts. Thanks for the heads up. BTW, the pebbles are cool, I have a few Plomb adjustable wrenches in my small collection-not available at this time-sorry.

There's a vendor there named Russ, reddish blond hair, 40ish has all his tools priced on little tags and up on tables in plastic bins. Ask him next time you're there. He has had 'em before. In fact its next Sunday !! If I go , I 'll be draggin' a 5 gallon silver Sullair oil Bucket on a little dolly ...say Hi !!

Looking for vintage .... BIS. I have included 2 pics of 1 wrench (BIS) as an example. Thanks!

That "BIS" was manufactured by Bethlehem Steel founded in 1857.

Elroy has this 1-1/4" Williams available if you're interested

Elroy, thanks, but I mainly collect the Bethlehem Steel, American Bridge/United States Steel, Woodings Verona Tool Works(who made a lot of the AB wrenches), & vintage Kleins-ones that have the size/model# on the taper.

Acknowledged. Elroy tells me that if he comes across any of these he'll advise.

Thank you the response.

g6 , I found one in a dusty corner... on the back it has an 'H' and below that is an upside down V with a 'Y' under that and connected to the 'V' . The 'Y' has a line under it. The wrench is marked 7/8, but that must be the bolt size , as the opening is 1-7/16... what brand it it ?? I don't see how to post pix , but I can email pix to you........

Dale, it sounds like it's a Woodings Verona Tool Works spud wrench. If you look at the symbol, you will see the combination of WVT...sort of like the VW symbol with a T. The "H" is for heavy or hard. Spud wrenches are made for soft(regular strength) & hard(high strength) bolts, ie: the 7/8 you have is for 7/8" high strength bolts with a size of 1-7/16", a 7/8" regular strength is for 1-5/16" bolts. Sorry if too much info or confusing. Anyways, depending on the condition & $$$, I would be interested in this wrench. Thanks

What else is there to know about these spuds??

Elroy, a general rule of thumb on these wrench sizes is...1.5 times the bolt size for soft or regular strength bolts & 1.5 times the bolt size +1/8" for heavy, hard or high strength bolts. Once they get arced by a welder, they should not be used. Oh yeah, like every trade....work safe & keep your hands off my tools!

Any interest in an adjustable version? I think it was either a bonney or armstrong, pointed on one end, adjustable wrench on the other.

Adding more examples of spuds I'm interested in. 1st pic is the Klein...has size/model on large part of "taper", 2nd pic is a newer Klein with size/model on "flat" part of handle without "warnings on the jaw, 3rd/4th pics are the most recent Kleins with size/model on the "flat" & have "warnings" on the jaw-all I believe have the "KLEIN & SONS-MADE IN USA" on the back side of the "flat", 5th pic is the Woodings Verona with the unique symbol, size, & strength(R or H), 6th/7th pics are the American Bridge Co/USS with the "AB", size, & sometimes "HS". Hope this info helps. Thanks in advance.

A big THANKS:thumbup: to GJ member "skipskip" who sold me a nice Bethlehem Steel (BIS) spud wrench, it's a 7/8 HVY....similar to the 7/8 R (regular) from my original post. I received it today. Was a little rusty-which is common for these. Before & after pics below.

What about a Billings 1-7/16? Wrench is sound, little rusty. Someone marked over the factory marking with some ID initials, but you can still make out "1-7/16 , Billings, and the B in a triangle mark. Shipping would cost more than I want for it, it's pretty heavy. PM me if interested.

I have a 1-1/4" marked 908 XT with brand <W>, a W inside diamond, which means "JH Williams", and made in USA. Got it from my grandmother, no telling how long its been in yard, barn, or garage.

Thanks for the replies guys, but not exactly the make & vintage I'm looking for.

See posts #1, #19, & #22 for examples....thanks again.

I have a whole box full of these buried in garage. If your interested in a Herbrand let me know I should have one to spare. Herbrand was made in Fremont ohio and the company started in 1880's. Very well made tools up until about 1960 when they were bought out.....the later stuff is ok but just not the same quality...
