This is the kind of motivation I usually run into as well. At the end of the day you will have more satisfaction that you did it and saved a boat load of $$$$.

it's happened to me more than once. stupid-money for bids, & i bet those workers get $15/hr while the owner pockets the majority of it. i don't mind paying a decent amount for labor, but i'd do it myself if i got a $10K bid on $1200 worth of materials; drywalling isn't exactly skilled labor.

Really? There is a huge difference between someone who can properly finish drywall and a hack (unskilled labor as you put it). If you're happy seeing all the seams and having a half assed job done go ahead and hire the cheapest guy you can. Or better yet do it yourself and see what it turns out like.

I suppose anybody can tape and mud and texture drywall, it all depends on what you want the finished product to look like. If you want something to look really good, then hire someone who does drywall for a living.

When we did the daughter's three season porch which was 10ft b 17ft, the daughter and I hung the drywall and then we hired the finishing done by a professional drywall guy. He had two helpers with him and they taped, mudded, sanded and textured the walls and ceiling with "knock down" and they were done in one day. It cost $850 and was worth every penny of it, they did a super job. We could have done it ourselves, but it would not be done in a day, probably take us a week, and it would not look half as nice as what it does now. Sometimes it is best to just bite the bullet and hire something done.

Don't want to derail the thread but the damn wood prices right now are crazy. Almost $35 a sheet for 1/2" OSB. I bought 100 sheets for less than $7.00 a sheet a few years back and never seen it about $12 a sheet. Prices are going crazy just like the housing market. Time for a serious correction and fix these overpriced items and labor

Once again the Law of Supply and Demand comes into play; factories shut or running at reduced capacity because of the pandemic, delays in transportation because of the weather or lack of healthy drivers, increased demand spurred by low interest rates and working from home creating a desire for a better home office.

It may take a year to even out.

I like posting in 10 year old threads, so I’ll just add the wife has me doing a level 5 finish today. It’s a good thing unskilled labor is required because I am highly unskilled. Lucky for me it’s just a bathroom. If I had to do 185 shhets I’d hang myself instead of the Sheetrock.

I think it’s going to be reasonably a success. I’ve never tried level 5 before but I feel somewhat initiated.
