Made by Dutton Lainson Co. in Nebraska. Still in business.

Looks like and air gun of some kind, but how in the world would you attach an air hose?

Same thing is available as part of an oil can with a nozzle on the end. Looks like it would spray oil EVERYWHERE!!! Look here:

and here:

Also a painted one on ebay: https://www.ebay.com/itm/116724591885

One fellow I asked on another forum suggested it is used to punch a card for maintenance purposes. Not sure if he was joking. That would not explain why the long nozzle.

I cannot make heads or tails of the patent drawings on the two patents I've been able to find for this company. It would appear that your device is the handle for their "Golden Rod" pump oiler, but I am not finding such a model available on the company's website.

I've had both, they do connect to an air chuck. One is a blowgun the other sprays whatever you put in the can.

Was pretty sure it was a blow gun. Wasn't sure how it connected. Very simple and very effective. Plugged it into the coil up hose by my solvent tank. Slips over a regular ball type air chuck.
OHHHH. Thanks! It was killing me trying to see how it worked, and now I see the ball head schrader chuck is the cherry being pitted.

I've seen these before in old garages and flea markets and suchlike, and never quite figured out how they're supposed to work.

I've learned something today.

And man, that arrangement seems janky as all hell. I suppose there was a time before quick-release fittings on air hoses.

I'd say "innovative", not "janky". It works perfectly well for its application.

Yes, there was a time before QR couplings--at gas stations anyhow. Back when air was free, the line would only have the little chuck for a Schrader valve--and no gauge.

Might be a blow nozzle that snaps over an air chuck for quick dusting. Or to save the cost of a better blow gun.
That's the correct answer. My dad used to sell them as shops could use them any where they had an air hose for filling tires. Mechanics used a better one that used a air coupler to hook up as they didn't put couplers on tire hoses to keep them from getting stolen. With direct threaded air nozzle you knew whenever anyone tried to steal as you heard all the air going out.
